Definitely should be our Number 1 priority. I'm no Moyes fan, but we haven't had a good defensive set up since his time here. Mind you Moyes also had the benefit of Cahill and then Fellaini assisting defensively at corners. We miss that from a defensive perspective.

As previously stated elsewhere on GOT, we are still starting 3 ( Coleman, Jags and Baines ) of Moyes defenders, almost 6 years later.

Baines positioning for one of the Rennes goals was shambolic, it’s all well and good being able to join in the attack but running ahead of the ball without any cover is ridiculous and he does it time and time again.
When I was watching it I actually thought he did it on purpose and knew exactly what he was doing like a petulant kid who wasn’t happy he was getting tonked & throws the towel in.

You could see what was coming a mile
Away & he just let it happen.

But that's what the manager is asking him to do.

He didn't do it under Sam because Sam didn't want him to.

I'm not saying Baines is blameless. He's part of an awful defence currently, but the point of having a holding midfielder is that a full-back can get forward and the cover is there.

The manager is wanting to play a system with inside forwards and the full-backs need to provide the width in that system. So we need our holding midfielder to be able to sit back and cover the entire width of the pitch - which is why Gana has to play in that role, because currently he is the only player we have capable of doing that.

To facilitate that, we need a powerful player who is also good on the ball to be the box-to-box/link player between midfield and attack in the centre.

They look skint.

Leicester linked with a 35m move for him - reckon they'll need 50m plus.
There was a graphic posted of how much teams have spent this window and I'm pretty sure Newcastle were -17m (or thereabouts).
Reminded me of how we've been for the last 20 years.

He'd be a very welcome addition but I'm not sure about 50m.
