Completely agree. If Risden had wrapped his footround the ball and played it out for a throw in, but still tripped Griezeman i'm pretty sure the ref wouldn't have given a foul and it would have been a great tackle.

Because it wouldn't have been considered careless, it was would have been considered a well thought out and well executed tackle.

That's the difference.

But thats exactly what it looked like on first viewing and that's what it was.

To go back and deduce that's a careless tackle from that is speculation at best.

I know it's open to interpretation at the very least but it still stings.

So the game carried on until it went out of play. What would have happened is Australia had scored in that time? Would they have disallowed it and gone back to the penalty? Does the time played before the decision is brought back not count or is it just a late decision that gets put in at the time they decide?

This is my gripe, there should be another official watching it whilst play is still going on, I don't see why the ref should have to stop the game and go over and have a look at the sideline. If they're not certain, they just stick with the ref's decision.

The France penalty was not an issue with VAR, the issue was with the ref arguably making the wrong decision, but that will always be the case, technology can't fix that, but it will definitely help more correct decisions being made.

No doubt dinosaurs at BBC will highlight the one instance it doesn't work instead of the ten times it does.

It was a penalty mate.
If you're going to give free kicks and penalties for contact on the follow through then you may as well just do what Platini had as his objective when in power at FIFA -- ban tackling!

And the fact that contributors on here are split on whether it was a penalty or not illustrates the fact that it should never have been referred to VAR or if it was then it was not clearcut enough for the ref to change the outcome. Technology should ONLY be used on issues when there is no subjectivity over a decision.

He definitely got a touch on the ball, but I think Griezmann was running on to it for a shot when he was brought down.
It was the same tackle. I player can’t suddenly just stop forward momentum when making a tackle. Not a pen for me.

A member of staff from each team should sit in the office with the video refs.
Allowed one challenge per game to a decision.
Similar to nfl and tennis system.
Win the challenge, you keep it, lose it, you're done.
The goal line tech stays as it is.

Only my opinion, but its fair and the system as it is clearly isn't working well.

How can you be against it? I don't get it? At least there is a justice in football now.

Deffo a pen in a Peru - Denmark game.
