Leaving aside the fact that there are plenty of people on here who would be taking a significant salary cut to take £52k a year, you're forgetting that it's still a job.

You're looking at it through rose tinted glasses, where you're living your dream and everything's wonderful. What if you didn't like your manager though? What if you didn't like your team mates? What if every day was a struggle because you just couldn't face going in to work, and you knew that you could go and make a fresh start somewhere else and have your wages increased 100 times over? That's what people forget time and again. These people are human, they have feelings and get bored and annoyed and offended just like you do. The fact they earn more doesn't change that, you can be rich and unhappy believe it or not.

If Rooney feels these things then why would money be the only priority? Money ain't going to change these things. There's much more to life.

Rooneys answer to problems throughout his career has been to follow more money. It makes no sense to me. How could he possibly need more?

I wasn't really commenting on Rooney specifically, just saying that the idea of being happy to play for Everton for nothing/a nominal salary is a lovely sentiment, but absolutely not grounded in reality.

I think people are being a bit kind to Rooney here tbf.

There’s absolutely no reason why Rooney couldn’t have been as good as if not better than Ronaldo. Ronaldo wants to be the best with every fiber of his being. He lives and breathes perfection , whilst Rooney is always out on the piss , smoking and eating Chinese.

Rooney was actually ahead of Ronaldo at Euro 2004.

It's not grounded in reality for some. But it is grounded in reality for others. Loyalty does still exist in places and not every footballer is motivated solely by milking even more money when they already have millions.

I don't think Wayne deserves his 150k + a week. His performances since christmas were extremely poor. I think it's bad for team spirit that he earns so much more than everyone else. And I think that if he was so desperate to stay here then he would accept a pay decrease to bring him in line with the rest of the team.

In a nutshell Wayno

Which is the point @Tel001 is making I think. Rooney developed faster, so he peaked sooner, and his decline started earlier. The fact he was better when they were teenagers doesn't mean his ceiling was higher. 5 years ago Jordan Pickford wasn't one of the 4 keepers England picked for the under 20 World Cup but now he's the first team's number 1 and the people who were keeping him out haven't played a PL game between them.

That was my point exactly, his lifestyle hasn't helped and if he trained like Ronaldo and ate like him he would be in better shape than he is now , but I always felt Rooney would age faster as he grew up earlier, he was a physically ready for the prem at about 15
