Yakubu or Donovan

Another topic with Yakubu being bashed and Donovan being presented in very overrated way. Not a surprise that I am starting to seriously dislike idea to get Donovan (there's a term, like pushing something down your throat) and hoping Yakubu will show a middle finger (not literally unfortunately) to all his doubters.

THIS. Yakubu has been s***e since the start of the 08/09 season and frustrates me whenever he plays nowadays, Saha and Beckford look very sharp and Vaughan has started to show signs of quality, Donovan was vital to us in his two and a half months here, Yakubu was a luxury if we needed a goal and quite often he didn't provide, Donovan hands down.

I'm going to have to respectfully stay out of this one. I think Yak is very good but i started following everton because of donovan... i have a bit of a bias. Although I will say that i question the Yak's ability to stay healthy while I can't recall the last time Donovan sat out of any game (club or country) because of injury.

A bit unfair there stinger mate. Let's try to separate overzealous web chat w/ the actual players themselves. The fact that LD has generated a disproportionate level of fan support should not be counted against him. If anything, from a business standpoint (assuming the club is competent enough to actually CAPITALIZE on said buzz, awareness, & support), it's actually an additional variable in the "plus column" for Donovan, not the other way around.

That said, even I as a Yank find myself "rolling the eyes", thinking, "oh boy, more of this??" regarding some of the regurtitated & sometimes over the top LD stuff.

And while some of the Yak bashing seems harsh to me as well, that doesn't mean I don't have my own concerns & doubts. I've said it before, I think his "age" is the kicker for me. At true 27, I'd keep Yak in a heartbeat. At 30-33, I'd sell in a hurry & buy Landon w/o blinking, no second guessing.

Sad we're forced to even entertain these "choices" in the first place. A club of this stature shouldn't have to go through this. We should be able to bring 1 in w/o losing the other ffs! (my official 1st kenwrong outburst!).

Anyway, I hear where ur comin' from w/ the constant LD stuff. But think about it this way, at a time when we're agonizing over whether or not 2 vital players are going to stay, the fact that a guy who very clearly is DYING to play for us, could care less about money (think about that fact for a moment), & to top it off has an enormous rabid fanbase representing an unprecedented gateway opportunity into the most lucrative sports market in the world (by leaps & bounds biggest, almost to point of embarrassment, if you don't acknowledge that you're simply kidding yourself) should be a positive, whether he actually comes or not isn't the point. And certainly shouldn't take any frustration from over the top web posters on the player. All he's done is stated his love & desire to wear the shirt.
 
Frankly, the Yak's age doesn't concern me too much. It's not like his game is about speed. Get him around the 18-yard box and he'll score goals and create others. I think his hold-up game fits well with a five-man midfield.
I'll take the Yak. I'm giving him a full season post-injury before I write him off. His career goalscoring record warrants at least that.
 
Goal scoring records are just that, they are in the past and no harbinger of the future. Especially so in the case of Yak who has suffered what is probably thw worst unjury he has ever had and took a long time recovering. Bound to have affected his performance. However I am not advocating selling him to buy LD, if Yak were to go which IMO is unlikely, we need to replace with a striker.

Agree with that. If he finds his form again we could all be saying that Yak is indispensible to us. He's scored goals throughout his career and is probably the most natural goalscorer we've had since Sharp left.
Yak is ready to pick it up again. I wouldn't mind betting he'll be the top goalscorer on Merseyside this season.
 
The question is can we rely on Saha, Beckford and Vaughan all season? Two players who are injury prone and one who's just come up from League one. I don't think so personally, and whilst there are question marks over Yakubu, more than not, he is available for selection, he isn't injury prone, he's just returning from a serious injury that put him behind in terms of fitness and sharpness.

Yakubu's game isn't just about goals, he's never going to be a 'worker' when it comes to running but his game is based heavily on team play, he likes to create, get involved, show for the ball and link things up when he can. And these areas of being a forward are very important. As a footballer, looking at his natural ability, I'd put him ahead of Donovan, comfortably. Yakubu is one of the best passers at the club aswell as one of the most intelligent. He's a very underrated footballer, one of the best at the club.
 

The Yak did create the greatest start to a move ever when he let that Burnley player bounce off his back like he was a frickin' trampoline.
 
I've said it once and I'll say it one more time.

I love Donovan and would love to have him here.

But not at the expense of the Yak. No chance.
 
It is rare to have a forward who can combine such dominating levels of pace and power. A healthy Yak is someone I wouldn't want to see anywhere but in an Everton shirt.

Frustrating to think this Donovan situation could end up like McBride Part II. I would've loved to have seen that particular signed permanently after his loan move ended.
 
As much as I like Donovan and would love to see him here in the winter, I think he's going to be pretty tired by then (unless he's knocked out early in the playoffs). He's never played this much footie before and seems to be running on fumes right now as it is.
