Who from the squad should be starting games next season?
Pickford, Coleman, Gueye, Walcott, Sigurdsson
+
Who from the squad is good enough or at least has the potential to become a valuable starter next season?
Tosun, Mori, Klaassen (think he's been handled disgracefully)
+
Who from the squad should at the very least be given a chance to stake a claim for a start?
Lookman, Vlasic, Holgate, Onyekuru, Niasse
+
Who clearly won't / shouldn't be a starter but is useful backup?
Kenny, Baines, Keane, Davies, Beningime, DCL, Rooney (purely on account of the fact he won't be sold)
= keeping 20 players

Who needs binning off asap?
Williams, Jagielka, Mirallas, Schneiderlin, Bolasie, Sandro, Browning, Tarashaj, Galloway, Garbutt, Martina, Pennington, Besic, Stekelenburg, McCarthy, probably also Dowell
= 16 players gone

I make that only 5 players who stand out from our entire squad, plus three I count as having potential to break into the starting XI, and a handful of players who imo deserve the chance to show they have what it takes to be be in and around the starting XI.

I say we need at four starters in the summer: A left winger, a central midfielder, a left back, a centre back.

That's a squad size of 24 and only four brand new faces. Can't be too hard can it?
Agree with most except dowell

He finishes what he usually started at Ajax. He would play deep and move the ball from defense to offense well before he'd sneak into the box. He was pretty good at it and his first touch is outstanding. I still would've never paid what we did to get him, but he'd sure as hell get a chance or at least be on the bench every game.

Davies can run with the ball pretty well, but again, he's still a kid. Best we've got though. You just can't play Siggy and Rooney together in the midfield with just Gana. They can play together, but not in the middle.
Actually so would I. I would play a midfield 3 of Sigurdsson, Gueye and Klassen.

However because we loaned Lookman out I don't think that would work with our current squad. It would need pace on the wings.

I don't know. At the moment I don't see how I could fit Klassen in but I would want to give him another season but not as a starter. He would have to win his place first and for that he would need to be playing in a team that complements him.

Half of these players are loaned out already, and there's no question that Mirallas and Besic for instance will never wear a blue shirt again.

Most on this list I can't say I'm that bothered whether we sell them or not as long as we get the first team right. Martina for instance : nothing wrong with his attitude or his consistency, he won't hide on the pitch like some players. He plays out of position without complaining week after week and gets nothing but stick. We need to strengthen so that we don't have to play him, but we could do worse than keep him in the squad.

I don't see the point in selling Jagielka. There's no money to be made. Allardyce doesn't know yet how far he can rely on Mori. Keane and Holgate can both benefit from having a figure like Jags supporting them. And even though Jagielka's had a poor season he's shown that he's still capable of great performances, he's still got something to offer on the pitch.

McCarthy is going nowhere because who wants to buy an injured player.

He has literally never played as an 8 in his entire life. You want to push him up the pitch and play the 10, of course, he's terrific there. Like how he plays for Iceland. He never has played deep though, so he's not going to be a 6 or an 8.
what is a 6 and an 8?

Martina has been our only successful signing in terms of vastly outperforming what was expected of him.

I wouldn't play 4-2-3-1 I would play a 4-1-4-1.

See my post on what team would you play next season for more details. :)

Although that team has Denis Suarez playing where Klassen would play which makes sense because I wouldn't go into a season with him as a starter. Not done enough, or anything at all to suggest that would be a good idea.

He'd fit right in to where Davies played last game. Play Bolaisse and Walcott on the wings if you want more pace. 4-2-3-1. I had no problem with the lineup except for Niasse last time out, I had a MUCH bigger problem with the lack of subs when Rooney/Siggy the entire midfield was gassed.

But upgrades at LB, CB, and that 8 position would make us dangerous. Add in Lookman/Henry on the left and hope that Tosun come around.

what is a 6 and an 8?
In this case, 6 is a defensive mid, Gana is more of a ball winning mid as a 6, which is fine. 8 is a central mid, Davies is more of a box-to-box type, that can tackle, but also quickly move the ball and/or run with it. Siggy would be more of a 10 if he played with those guys, attacking mid up a bit higher, playmaker role.

Neither did I at the time but Rooney was for most of the game really poor. A couple of times he couldn't pass to a teammate 5 yards away when under no pressure.

Plus and I know there's not much difference but it looked more a 4-1-4-1.

When I said I couldn't find a team it wasn't really because of Klassen. He would replace Davies as you said but if we move Sigurdsson to replace Rooney we don't really have anyone for the left.

Bolasie and I did like Bolasie before his injury but he isn't the same player at least not yet. Vlasic is an option but as others have said could he be trusted to provide the backup Martina needs?

Unfortunately that leaves us back with putting Sigurdsson back out there and if we do that an attacking midfield of Sigurdsson, Klassen, Rooney and Walcott is collectively very slow.

Davies at least gives a bit more mobility over Klassen and in theory Rooney should be able to control the game. I can see the reasoning behind the team selection even if its a bit poo.

Screw it. I would try Vlasic on the left and Sigurdsson and Klassen in the center. That midfield was so poor those players should at least be given a go.

Yeah I think on reflection I would drop Sir Rooney to the bench for the next game after that performance and start with Sigurdsson and Klassen in the middle with Gana behind them. Walcott on one side and either Vlassic or Bolasie on the other with DCL up front. Perhaps DCL and Walcott would be pacy enough. really Lookman on the left but sadly not this year...
Davies and Niasse on in the second half. As Klassen cannot be fully match fit.
The defense doesn’t really matter in that with Coleman and Baines out its a crapshoot anyway.
On topic - the defense needs money spent more than other spots and then a big fast CF who can bang a few in.

Lookman leaving with Bolaisse still not fit was an insane decision frankly.

It's gotta be Sig on the left with Rooney, Gana, Davies. If Coleman is healthy, it's a different team. He and Walcott would be difficult to deal with. Think you have to play Keane and Holgate.

Honestly, Rooney just played a bad match. If he's giving the ball away AND Davies is making more mistakes in their end than normal, it kills us. I would've brought on Tosun and Bolasie well before we conceded and moved Siggy central. Bolaise looked awful, but still think we at least get the draw if not a winner.

But either way, in the summer, we need to turn CB, LB, and CB into positives. Bin enough other players and we would have enough cash, but there is a LOT to bin.

centre half, left back, centre mid, winger and a striker needed to improve this team.

hopefully Davies can show he should be one to start next season as this season finishes, always think we look better with him in the side even when he doesnt play well
