Data is far more accurate than watching a player once or twice.

However you also have to look at the type of team a player plays in to see if the data is relevant (how often he touches the ball, where he passes it, the types of goals he scores, how fast he is, where he moves). If we played exactly like Besiktas then his data would be more relevant. As we are complete opposites in style I worry that the data isn't.
Data alone is misleading.

Even dullard footballers have worked out that if they play repetitive boring sideways passes to one another in their own half, they get amazing "passes complete" stats.

Data alone gives us a world of Tom Cleverlys. :(.

As many as seven perhaps?
Whatever it takes to make sure the multi million pound decision is the correct one! If you go once or twice then potentially you could end up up with a Cuco Martina.
Every poor player can have a decent game or two

Well no, you just change the type of data you collect.

You look at percentage of forward / backwards passing.

It works in EVERY industry on the planet, data and modelling.

Sod all that just get of your arse and go and watch the player your interested in for as many times as needed until your happy or not! I bet you loads of clubs across Europe think Henderson is a great player because of his ‘pass completion’ when in reality he’s a crab and a fraud

How do you think data is collected on scouting?

Stats are collected on productivity, but data is collected in regards to scouting certain attribute, its then double ansd tripple checked by other people to validate those numbers.

Yes, data can be useful in skilled analytical hands, but most often it is used to bamboozle and sell to the uninitiated. Sadly its main use, outside of science, is in manipulation.

Look at VW emission data. Look at how exam boards, government, schools and Ofsted all mangle data to suit their own ends (my own experience).

Data is nothing without context and knowledge.

Exactly.

"I know Sam Allardyce's philosophy really well. Worked with him about 1,5 years. Allardyce lets his striker feel alone on pitch and his system can't really provide for his team's striker. He plays long balls and expects you to collect them. Now Cenk has the ability to do that too but the main thing about him is his great finishing. If we imagine him working with one of the coaches from the top 5-6, we might see a completely different thing. A Cenk who scores 20-25 goals a season... Now i'm not saying these to criticize anybody. It's just that i have doubts about the coach's mentality. Other than that i've zero doubts about Cenk and i think he'll be very succesfull." Emre Belozoglu
