I wouldn't rate Citeh ahead of Everton in terms of US awareness. In general it's Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea (which in a sense formed more naturally in the U.S. because they *were* good as U.S. fans began to get access to EPL matches. You had to be pretty dedicated to understand the history before that.) A strong Newcastle following, edging out the other well-established Premiership sides (e.g. Spurs, Everton, Citeh, Villa, etc.) all of which are on roughly equal footing after that.

If anything, Everton and Fulham stand out from the crowd because of their well-established history with American players; these 2 clubs gave Yanks a chance to prove themselves when everyone else was ****ging them off.

It is funny that even after Claudio Reyna being City's captain this is still the case, but it is. City's awareness over here was equal to that of Everton (before Donovan). Since Donovan, our profile rose GREATLY.

City signing a bunch of stars is going to increase their visibility though, so it is only a matter of time for them. signing donovan would be smart for them to increase their awareness (but dumb for donovan). It also could backfire for them if he isn't successful there (like he was with us).

It seems very unlikely we'll be able to sign him up, so I'm hoping that we get him on loan again. That would suit me well.
 
Garber says MLS doesn't want to sell him.

Moyes says we have no more money.

Nailed on he signs before the end of the summer.

NEW YORK — U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard is ready to grind out the next four-year cycle heading into the 2014 World Cup.

"What's gone on in the last four years and where I feel like I'm at in my career, I think I'd be silly not to try and tackle the next four years and give it everything I have," Howard told The Associated Press on Friday. "I feel fitter than I ever have at 31. I feel like I'm playing the best I have."

Howard allowed five goals in four games, with 16 saves, in his first World Cup as a starter. He acknowledged there were times the last couple of years he wasn't sure if he wanted to stay on the national team through 2014.

"It's a grind. It's hard," he said. "It's a big commitment, a big responsibility."

It's a responsibility he welcomes after the Americans won their World Cup group for the first time in 80 years, before a disappointing overtime loss to Ghana in the knockout stage.

But first it's back to England and Everton of the Premier League, where he established himself as an elite goalkeeper. For 10 weeks last winter, he played alongside U.S. teammate Landon Donovan, who was on loan from Major League Soccer.

MLS commissioner Don Garber said Thursday the league doesn't plan to accept transfer offers for the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder, but that additional offseason loans are possible.

Howard grinned when asked if Donovan would join him at Everton.

"I've heard my good friend Don Garber say absolutely not," he said. "He's doing fantastic things in the MLS. I left seven years ago and the MLS now is so amazing in the growth they've had. Landon's been a huge part of that.

"If it worked out as it did last year for all parties and he came for three months, that'd be great. He had a fantastic World Cup and there are a lot of people who want his signature. We hope we can persuade him. But, again, he has a team; he has a commitment."

But isn't Everton the best place for Donovan to improve his game?

"I'm going to say yes because I'm an Evertonian," Howard said.

"That's something that Landon has to assess," he said. "That decision has been chewed on a lot by different analysts. Landon continues to prove people wrong, that he can still be a world-class player, play huge on the biggest stages and be part of the L.A. Galaxy. That speaks to how well the MLS is doing and how highly respected the MLS is."

Howard would like to see Bob Bradley remain as the U.S. coach — and would like to see Bradley join him in the Premier League. There's talk of Bradley taking over at Fulham."

Well, despite what Don Garber said, and despite what some news reports are saying (SkySportsNews), Landon does still want to play at Everton. Here is his complete quote: "I've always prided myself on the fact that I could stay here and help grow this sport here," he said. "Obviously I've taken criticism for that, but I love playing here, and I love this league.

"It's a little bit difficult at times because clearly every player at some point would want a chance to play at the highest level, in this case being the [English Premier League]. So there is a little bit of a struggle there with me thinking about all of it. But at this point, there's no need to worry about it. I can enjoy what I'm doing now and if something becomes a real possibility, that's fine."

If you get his whole meaning, he's really, really hoping someone (Everton) come up with the cash and buy him. He would love to come back to Everton and be a part of the team.
 
Rumor now is that Ronaldinho will be signing with LA for 6M a year in wages.

If that's true, then that would be LA's third DP (Designated Player) along with Beckham and Donovan.

I could see Donovan being sold if they brought him over.

I'm one of those American fans who has been watching national soccer forever (courtesy of dad who's Turkish - watch the USMNT and the Turkey national team), but finally bit the bullet during the World Cup since I loved it and looked for an EPL team to adopt. As a Landon Donovan and Tim Howard fan, I quickly learned of Everton, watched replays, read about the team, and said, wow, these Toffees are pretty cool!

I'm one of those lurkers that finally decided to come out and post today after watching Donovan play against DC United in the MLS (on TV). I would love for this league to get better, but it's a waste for Sir Landon of Donovan. He sent two *stunning* crosses today that were woefully missed across the goal line. Sad. He is so much better than everyone else it's embarrassing. And since he's not on the decline, I desperately want to see him succeed in Europe (more), again with the Toffees!

I thought I'd add this quote from him post game (on ESPN):

Last week, MLS commissioner Don Garber said the league would not consider transfer offers for Donovan.
"If we need to have a discussion at some point, then we will," Donovan said. "But at this point that's his opinion. If I were the commissioner I would say the same thing."


Read: Everton, please ignore this fool who is speaking, I do not agree with him [it's his "opinion" being pretty clear that nothing was discussed with Landon]. I am interested, please come get me.

Bill Simmons at ESPN has also called for a boycott of MLS, it's quite awesome. He has 1.2 million twitter followers:
Boycotting MLS until they let Landon Donovan sign w/ Everton. He'd have a bigger impact kicking ass in the Premier League. MLS = Double A.

Just thought I'd add some fuel to the fire and return to lurkdom. It really does appear that despite what the league is saying, Landon is sending signals that he wants to go. Nearly every quote he gives is a "safe" PR answer - he has been trained very very well (I have gone through media training), BUT, nearly every quote he gives he leaves he door open to future discussions. That is a clear signal. He is also STILL giving these quotes - aka he could have shut the talk down awhile ago, but he chooses not to. Things that make you go hmmmm...

I really would enjoy seeing him back. It is pretty crowded in the midfield position but if you hope to think big things as a club and play more matches a season as a result, it helps to have a few more players here and there.

You are crazy. Everyone misses good chances no matter what league you are in. The things you mentioned are not because of the quality of MLS. Boycotting MLS as an American is stupid. That would just hurt our national team.
