It seems that when centre backs fall out of form, it happens quickly...at least for us. Heitinga; MVP one season, history the next. Distin; one of the most feared CB's one season, not even in the squad the next. Williams is just the latest example...and Jags isn't far behind.

Watching a once quality player unravel in front of eyes is just plain depressing. The fact that we haven't got a quality replacement, is more so!

A common factor here is the age of those players though. The fact is when you're in your 30's in the summer between seasons your age can suddenly catch up with you and you go from being the seasoned pro to a knackered horse at the glue factory. Seen it happen loads of times and not just at us. No one can outrun time, especially in this league. We did the right thing getting Keane in this season at this age, but we desperately need a partner for him of similar age, and perhaps more foootballing ability.

Seeing Gary Neville chat about getting past your best, said he felt like he was always about to let the team down with a gaff

Spot on. In fact without googling it, I think I know the exact interview where he said that. Didn't he say he was getting totally rinsed by some bang average player and knew at half time that it was over for him? Respect for that.

Just googled it.. it was Jerome Thomas at West Brom. Neville said he "made him look like Ronaldo". I wonder when Williams will reach that point. Hopefully soon.

Didn't he say this after playing against baines and pienaar?
