I heard David Moyes mentioned and I felt an overwhelming sense of dread.
I know he did a great job with you, establishing you as a top 10 outfit in consecutive seasons (on a shoe-string budjet) but the bloke is finished as a premier league manager. I can only judge him from his time with us, and his negative, dull, ancient tactics all contributed to making an already terrible Sunderland team - miraculously, incredibly - worse!
Saying "we're in a relegation battle" before a ball was kicked was an awful decision. Was he sending out a dig to Short (our owner) about his lack of cash? was it reverse psychology to try and sort a few egos out? I'm not sure, all it did was suck all the life out of our club and ensure, expectation was already woefully low.
Tactically, he set us out to defend (which we never quite got the hang of) and nick a goal. If the opposition scored, there was no plan b, no urgency to change our style of play, there was nothing. He couldn't even muster the energy to run up and down the touchline and show that old 'Angry, passionate Jock' side he used to have...Nothing, just acceptance, head in hands, lose the game, say "We'll keep going" in post match interviews and repeat.
Slow passing, players out of position, strange substitutes (taking off strikers when we're losing at home with 20 minutes left) and even his post match interviews were dull and lacking in effort/passion.
I totally accept he inherited a really poor squad but he didn't improve us, on the contrary he made us worse, I can honestly say I was delighted when he left. We've had some candidates for awful managers, McCarthy, Poyet, Di Canio (to a degree) but he's right up there with the worst.
He failed his big test at United, made a balls-up In Spain and then failed another assisgment with us. Since leaving you, he's been on a bit of a spiral. I honestly think he hasn't evolved with the game and his tactics/strategy are completely out-of-date.
I must say, I'm not underestimating what he did for you. He made you a really tough outfit, hard to beat (You give us some hard lessons, like the 7-1 massacre) and you had winners in your team. Ferguson, Cahill, Hibbert, Arteta, Osman, Neville etc. You held your own among the top teams having spend a fraction of the money they had. He was a shrewd, clever wheeler-dealer but his signings for us were disastrous. He didn't have money to spend (Courtesy of our tight owner who wants to bleed us dry) but isn't that what made him such a great manager? Ability to get the best out of the lesser players and spotting bargains?...
Obviously, if he takes over your squad he'll have much, much more to work with than he did with us, plus he has a real connection with you so maybe I'm totally wrong (I have been many times before). lol Seems like the majority tend to agree, maybe give this a wide berth lads.
But, stand by my point - I think he's done.
Hopefully Koeman will turn this around for you and this will be irrelevant.
