Quality player who will get goals, we should sign him on loan immediately. It's pathetic that we have to sign a short term loan. We have really messed up big time by not replacing Lukaku before we sold him. We are so much weaker than last season at the moment - it doesn't matter who he's brought in if we can't score.

Agree. I can't understand why we rushed to sell him to Man U when we surely could have waited until end of window /until we had replacement lined up?

If we had the opportunity to sign last seasons Diego Costa -fitness issues and the assumption he won't be fully committed saving himself for Atletico aside- for a 6-month period then it would be a fantastic acquisition but it merely papers over cracks.

We'll have built are team around Costa as the focal point, then 6 months later we're left back at square one. The difficulty signing a top centre forward now will only increase in January and given the team would have built to Costa's strengths we'd be looking to plug a very specific hole. Admittedly Costa seems to fit mould as 'targetman' but we'd have spent the best period of the loan figuring out his traits, and playing to his strengths, so it would be a mini-overhaul come January. Face value this seems like a no-brainer, but factoring in everything it doesn't make a lot of sense.

If its Costa for a full season then yes, if its Costa alongside a permanent signing then thats best of both worlds, if its Costa for 6-months then we've really missed the boat in recruiting a replacement for Rom. Costa will surely bang them in for us but (keeping with the boat analogies) we'll be rudderless come January and his goals will only exaggerate the problem we face.

An unfit Costa who needs a month to get fit until January, or some of the absolute garbage strikers we have been linked with like Deeney, Costa everytime.

Regarding strikers, we have several options -
  • sign a top striker (not world class) who is out of favour at a top club (Giroud)
  • Sign young promising striker and hope they can have immediate impact (Sandro, Henry, Dembele)
  • Sign a "decent" striker from a smaller club for inflated price (Benteke, Deeney, Vardy)
  • Take the only opportunity we have to get a world-class striker (Costa)
January might be easier for us to sign option 1 above, particularly Giroud.

We can't even get the ball in the box so there's not much point anyway lol

He was the joint 4th most booked player in the league both last season and the season before, so I'm not sure he had much of that "sky 6" protection.
And the number of those yellows that should have been reds? The number of times he was on a yellow but committed further fouls and the ref bottled the second yellow?

As you said yourself - he's the 4th most booked player in the league. He has a track record for playing dirty. He's not suddenly going to change, is he.

Do you seriously believe that "sky 6" teams don't get favourable treatment from the refs?

yeah we should agree the whole season and then offski to Madrid. Would love him in the blue, one of those players you hate playing against you but love if he is in your colours
This I could live with. If we are going to loan him, then at least make it a season-long loan so that we can actually get 25 games out of him.

Eh? The window closes on Thursday and we don't have a game for 10 days after that. How does how long the deal takes make it less attractive?
Loaning a player who's unfit, means we're essentially helping Chelsea get a better price in January. Where is it good business to not have a loaner hit the ground running & ready for 90 minutes?

If the deal was done earlier in the window, even pre season, it'd be a better deal. If we had a good striker, better than what we've got, and he's backup, then that's a better deal even.
