The irony of all this is had the manager selected Kenny for what was an important and difficult game, and had his inexperience cost us a goal, this thread would be awash with people writing the said players entire future off, just like the Calvert - Lewin thread. Except for absolute emergencies you generally do not throw young players in and hope for the best. The manager observes them in training with the rest of the squad and decides whether they are ready. In this case Koeman decided to go with the more experienced Martina. I thought Koeman handled the introduction of Davies to the first team perfectly last season as the results show.
In any course Martina performed his duties more than adequately last night so I will conclude the manager got it right.

If Kenny is good enough he will get his chance

Doesn't matter how good he is if Koeman would rather play Martina instead

Koeman has gone out of his way to bring one of his "boys" in. I can't see him dropping him very easily

I've seen nothing yet to suggest that the fears Martina would hamper the development of Kenny and Holgate are unfounded

This isn't Koeman bashing on my part either, merely me being consistent. I was annoyed when Martinez and Moyes did the same. In general I'm happy with Koeman's job thus far, but this doesn't sit right. Just giving my honest appraisal

I am not fully convinced by Kenny...yet.

I would be slow to play him last night , until he has shown more at first team level and I think he will get chances.
I think Martina is a signing that was made because of the injury to Coleman and when Coleman is fit again that he will slot back into the team.

Oh my giddy aunt! did you just basically offer somebody out over the internet? lol

schoolboy error!

Kenny will get his chance, lets hope he takes it.

no it was just banter. we are all fans here

I hope so I think hes got a lot to offer

What Kenny has shown is that he's a very positive attacking full back, much more so than Martina who arguably is at this stage better defensively , certainly more experienced. My thinking would have been to play Kenny in the first leg at home, create more attacking options and goals , and Martina in a likely hostile away game where we would be more defensive. Guess that's why I'm not Everton's manager.
My concern really is that the young defenders don't get the same opportunities for minutes when they're on the bench as the young attackers do. DCL; Lookman;Dowell are all game changers from the bench and have chances to get on if we are playing poorly. Kenny; Holgate; Connolly are less likely to get on even when they make the bench, you don't substitute Baines or Martina in a competitive match unless injured or utter gash that day.

I also feel that with Coleman only back in the new year, we need 2 RBs before that. Why can't Kenny play cups and Martina play the league, or home and away, or something. I'm sure there's room for both. Kenny can't have done more to work for a place. IF we can't promote a title winning U23 captain, with U20 world cup experience - are we really that much of a great club for young players?

The reality is the manager and the coach don't think he is ready for PL football. I can see him go out on loan to get game time and experience.

Martina and Holgate will play RB until Coleman is back.

...a loan is being mentioned but I can't really see the point because Kenny's done that already. I have to assume the Manager isn't likely to use him anytime soon which is a disappointment to me but RK has to do what he thinks is best.

I would have thought out of the world cup winning side, Kenny, Lookman and DCL were the ones who would be around the first team squad this season.

Martina is the fly in the ointment here, but I guess we have to judge the managers judgement. The main problem being is that Martina offers zero going forward and could not be any further away from Coleman, which is the kind of full back we need as it seems we have zero width in the side at present.
