Hes 20 mate yeah.

He looks a talent, but its utter madness to think about going into a season with possible Europa League with a player unproven at the highest level.

To be fair I think the point is that is that it's also utter madness to go into a season with a player proven to be utter dung at the highest level. Rather than one who at least *might* be good.

All a moot point of course if Martina is being looked at as just backup.

Martina is still good signing from kenny point of view. This means that kenny might get a start rather than spend millions on a rb

You couldn't be further off the mark here, he's always been highly rated by staff at the club.
I know he's been highly rated at youth levels but he went out to Wigan in league one a few years ago before being sent out to Oxford in league two after that. He's not had a loan out to the championship and we've given first team opportunities at right back to a younger lad who is meant to be a center half ahead of him. He's had two first team appearances, Ledson had more than he had and was someone I thought was rated higher and we still sold him off to Oxford.

He's had two substitute appearances and all of a sudden people are saying we don't need a back up right back because he put in a few good crosses. I know he was always highly rated but I always thought he was going the way of Ledson rather than Davies.

I'm sorry but where was all this talk about how great he was and ready to contribute to the squad three months ago? Holgate walked into the squad and leapfrogged him.

I'm not saying he isn't a good player just that he seemed to be on a certain path we've seen other promising prospects go down and now after two brief sub appearances people are willing to take the chance on him as a back up for what is going to be a very intense season with a lot of matches to play.

Interesting you use the example of Davies and Ledston when they are perfect examples that it's not always the long-hyped kids who make it.

Kenny seems to be in a similar position to Davies was before he broke through. Not the flashiest or the longest hyped, but has kicked on a level, been a consistent standout performer, shown a good attitude and has shown he can mix it with the big boys on the few occasions asked of him so far. He also plays the position in which we are most short. Combine that with the fact that he just captained his team to their league title and there really isn't much cause for confusion at people wanting to see if he can make the step up to the first team proper.

We all want to see if he can make the step up, he will be given every chance to impress Ronny, hell Ronny has given games to Pennington, so its clear you dont even have to have any talent to get games from Ronny.

I guess Galloway and Garbutt arent cutting it

Suspect Garbutt will be moved on and Galloway really isnt a LB for me, hes a CB that can play fullback, hes not a natural LB and it shows in his game, he can clearly do a job there, a very decent job, but still.

Would have been interesting if Baines got an injury near the end of the season, I suppose Gaz Baz would have played LB?

Overall I think the defence is in need of the same work as the forward line.

By no means am I saying he isn't good enough or anything like that, it has just come as a shock to see every man and his dog calling for him to be in the team all of a sudden when he was being kept out of the squad all season by a younger player who is filling in and doing a job at right back.

Maybe him being away last summer with England U19s hurt his chances of taking that back up right back spot against Holgate who had more opportunity to impress last preseason.

Still though, Koeman had persevered with Holgate over Kenny for most of the season for his own reasons. I'm glad he's doing well but I was disappointed to see Ledson leave last summer and I just wonder why he couldn't get in the team ahead of Holgate last season.

I'd really like to see Kenny given a chance before we go and spend money on someone like Martina.

As I said in the transfer thread, Unsworth is a huge fan of the lad and I think that shows the quality and commitment he has.
