Everton Youth Teams Thread

..Liam Walsh breaks foot just as he got an England World Cup call up, dreadful for the lad;

Sad news for the lad but may be a bit of a blessing missing England and getting a full pre season. Whats interesting is Unsworth doesn't seem majorly concerned which is a good barometer.

Its nice to see Walsh finally be recognised with that England call up. To have had up to 6 players involved is a massive fillip for the club. When you consider Davies and Holgate are probably our most advanced in that age group you are looking at a core of 8 players who would probably be strong enough to represent England. That is quite some achievement for our heralded Golden generation. You also have Morgan Feeney captaining England the age group below, Evans sometimes involved in national teams as well, and above them a lad like Galloway who's had game time in the 21's. I honestly can't remember us ever having so many players involved in and around England squads.

Walsh has never really had international recognition, which always surprised me as most around the club saw him as one of our most talented lads. Guys like Holland, Yates, Brewster & Donahue have all been given exposure to England squads and have never been as highly thought of as Walsh was by Everton. That seems to be getting appreciated more widely and is indicative of the season he has had that he's forced his way in.

From the way Unsworth talks there is an insinuation that it could be the first of other call ups. Steve Walsh's words about the lads being able to be involved pre-season are also encouraging. I would like nothing more than to see 4 or 5 of the lads who are called up to England being around the first team squad next season. That will have to start with them getting an opportunity, and taking an opportunity in pre-season.

Anyway good luck to Liam getting back to full fitness. He should be raring to go for July and hopefully he can be involved in the first team pre-season.

...a lot can happen this summer with both comings and goings, some of these youngsters might move on or slip further back in the queue. There is also the possibility one or two come into consideration. Things will be clearer in a few months.

Definitely mate. On the one hand You sense we want to bring lads in. That Koeman has said he doesn't want too many young players at once and wants lads in their prime.

This has to be balanced against similar cautious warning in December being quickly followed by 4 or 5 younger players getting regular starts. Also Steve Walshs comments were interesting about the younger lads being given a chance. While lads will come in you feel lots will leave too, and we are going to have lots of additional games next season. Hopefully up to 15 more in the cups.

It's difficult. It's not realistic to expect another 4 or 5 lads to make it into the first team immediately. However I hope they get a chance to train with the first team and show what they can do. A bit like Holgate and to a lesser degree Davies last season (while Dowell and Galloway undoubtedly lost out). There will be winners and losers but all you can ever want is to see them given an opportunity.

I do think with some of them, for different reasons it will be last chance saloon. If Kenny doesn't make a breakthrough next season he will rightly ask himself what more can he do? In all honesty I think Dowell and Walsh will be the same. If they don't get game time here I can understandably see them wanting to go and play regularly men's football elsewhere. That doesn't worry me, as you say there's an inevitability of it, but I just hope they get an opportunity to show they might be up to it with us in pre season.

Apparently our U18s are playing EFC at away today. Kick off was at 11am.

Your youth teams are strong, can't see us getting anything out of this.

I was very impressed with your under 23s when we played you last. Very much reminded me of how ours were 2-3 years ago. Good players, younger who probably lack a bit of experience to turn good performances into results though that will come.

Our under 18s this season are weak. The weakest we've had for 4 years or so. I'd fancy Spurs to get a win to be honest. (Also our best 3 lads played with the 23s last night). Let us know if you find some updates. Also what do you make of Edwards, he looks a real talent to me but as indicated above just needs to add a bit of end product to his game.

I nkow you have mentioned Walsh has been told he can find a new club if he wants eggs, i heard that from a pal in work today also, so it seems it has abit of legs.

Edwards is a great prospect but might some of those Messi growth hormones to make it all the way.
