As I consistently harp, we'll never know if the kids can play at this level until we play them at this level. Not all at once, and in the right situation, but he should be given a run. We have zero risk right now.

One cautionary note I'd make though: he came on when we had no defending to do. Against a class team well in the game it'll be interesting to see if his positioning is up to snuff (Coleman's certainly wasn't when he came into the team when he arrived) and how does focussing on his main objective of defending impact on his getting forward.

I'm intrigued.

I think that is correct.
It is easy to say that a youngster has earned his chance, but there is no point in putting him into a team where the player in front of him leaves him exposed, as you rightly say, Lennon would have been the ideal tutor for him.
We should remember that Seamus spent some time as right winger before he became a fully fledged right back.

In fact, I think that is the major flaw with Del, he doesn't have the stamina to get forward and also get back to help out his full back in the 100 mph league that is the premiership.

I remember when he first arrived Coleman was played at FB. He played away at Benfica and his ropey positioning was exploited to the full. In fact, I still dont think positionally speaking Seamus is at the races. Neither is Baines, and that leaves us in a mess against quality opponents.

Not sure I agree with that. That's why we employ coaches and managers, to decide whether a player has what it takes. If the coach/manager doesn't think they're up to it, there's not much point chucking a kid in just so one of the tanked up ketwigged loons in the lower gwladys can decide whether or not they agree.
 

The way I remember it Coleman played quite a lot of his early games right mid (in front of Hibbert/Neville 2010/11 season)
Similar for JJK would prob help him.

If I remember rightly (and the full horror of that evening was experienced in person so the sight of Tony Hibbert at centre back* is engraved upon my memories) to make it even worse Coleman played at left-back in that Benfica game...

The eagle was fun, though.

(*To be fair, I think there was something to do with Yobo declaring himself unfit at short notice?)

At the end of the day, training isn't actual football. Players can look great in training and fail on the pitch and vice versa. I mean did anyone go into this season predicting Tom Davies would start most of the matches for us after December? No. I'm sure they thought he might be able to play at this level, but if they really thought he was what he has turned out to be, he would have been playing from day 1.

Oh yeah, LB it was. Very poor anyway.

It was only when he went to Blackpool on loan he learned how to get a bit more balance between defending and attacking.
 
Did well this lad. Deserves his run out. Shame we won't see him again this season though. Would have been nice to give him a start, particularly against Watford. Hope he really pushes on in the summer along with a few of the other young uns and grabs a place in the first team squad. I guess it's unlikely we'll bring in a RB with Seamus being offered a new deal.

Besides the crosses, I thought he showed good movement in showing for the overlap and playing to feet. Admittedly it's only 20 minutes to judge - and as said he faced no defensive duties- but the early signs are encouraging. You can tell a lot from the way a player controls the ball and shifts it on, even if for a few minutes.

Well Davies had broken into the side last season and played most of pre season so yeah I think a lot of people were actually quite surprised it took so long to get him in to the team.

Of course training is different, but the point I'm trying to make is we have to trust professionals to make a judgement on whether or not someone has what it takes. They're not infallible by any means, but I always find the idea that "we'll never know unless we pitch them in" a bit daft. I mean, I was a decent player as a kid but I've never been given a first team game at Everton either. Somewhere along the line it was decided I didn't have what it takes, and the same will happen to 99% of kids coming through. We don't get to have a vote as fans as to which players deserve a run out and which don't.

If Kenny, Pennington, Dowell, Williams etc are going to be good enough to be regulars in a top 4 team then I'm all for getting them in the team. If they're going to be championship/league one standard like many who've gone before them then I really couldn't care less if they play a handful of games for us or not.
