Summer Transfer Window 2017

Only after bringing in the likes of Kompany, Zabaleta (he may have been a bit later) etc for very cheap fees from random teams, and then yes they struck gold (like we attempted to do with Koulibaly).

But Robinho didn't work out really, and he was their last 'marquee' signing for about 3 years until Teves rocked up.

They mainly focused on recruiting from teams around or below them - i.e. Santa Cruz from Blackburn.

Kompany was highly regarded to be fair.

I would say we are already in the position City were aiming for when signing Santa Cruz etc.

Would be nice if a Keane etc would be supplementing a top player.

But what do you class as a top player?

Is it based purely on what club they play for?

Our last big signing (Schneiderlin) is an excellent player. But the only reason we got him is because he couldn't get a look-in at Utd.

Schneiderlin made sense as he enjoyed his best form under Koeman and was ideal for the role we needed.

But our best player this season arguably - Gueye - was bought from the worst-ever Premier League side.

So again, it doesn't matter what club they're coming from, as long as they improve us.

Would you class VVD as a top signing, or would he not be as Southampton are likely to finish midtable?

I've posted this before, but it's worth remembering who the players are that Man City signed in the two seasons following their takeover:

Gareth Barry
Roque Santa Cruz
Stuart Taylor
Emmanuel Adebayor
Kolo Toure
Sylvinho
Joleon Lescott
Patrick Viera
Adam Johnson
Jo
Tal Ben-Haim
Vincent Kompany
Shaun Wright Phillips
Pablo Zabaleta
Robinho
Wayne Bridge
Craig Bellamy
Nigel De Jong

Robinho aside, who was the one marquee player they did manage to get, they mostly bought established Premier League players from teams who couldn't match their spending power and the odd prospect from abroad - De Jong and Kompany were at Hamburg, I think, and seen in the sort of bracket that you might put Tielemans in now.

Robinho aside, I don't think they did anything particularly different to the way we seem to be going about things

No its not at all. But I want more than a player having one good season.

I think VVD is slightly overrated to be honest. I would have him here no doubt but dunno about him being a "top" signing.

To be honest I have no idea who I want. Its like going shopping with loads of money but not knowing what to do with it.

I think we already have those type of players though. We need our David Silva now.

Easier said than done I know.

Tevez and Adebayor were pretty big statement signings for them only a year after their takeover. But they had Sheikh billions to throw at it, we don't have the cash on that scale at the moment.

Only if we play 2 up top. Which we probably wont.
Exactly
If Lukaku stays we will find it hard to attract a top quality CF to sit on the bench.
That's one of the reasons Rooney is being sought , can play up front or in the middle.
The likes of Dolberg or that lad from Sassulo in Italy that can play more than one position are better options.

Domenico Berardi?

Have we been linked with him?

Do we not need to define what the next level really is though? We've just got EL due to favourable cup results elsewhere. In my eyes the next step is finishing 5th/6th which they can help take us to. After that we buy better again and the step after that is Top 4.

Seems to be a rush to get to the top on this forum.
Sounds reasonable and level headed. The problem for me is all the teams above us started the season with realistic hopes of securing the title they failed but finished above us. If you aim to snag a 6th place, fail and your mid table. Aim to secure mid table security ,fail and your in a relegation battle. If we want to finish amongst the teams above us ,you have to be able to beat them, if your capable of beating them, then by rights , you should have a chance of the title.
In theory anyway.:)

Not sure but a few on here that watch a lot of Italian football rate him
He is at a club that would accept a decent fee and he is on relatively low wages.
Juve had a share in his ownership but sold him back as he wasn't deemed good enough and I think they sold Pogba and bought Higuain at the same time
Not sure though

TBF, I thought Tevez was the following year but you're right

Having said that, Man City had more money to throw at it than we do and weren't constrained by FFP/STCC either

I'm not suggesting we aim for 5/6th but we should be content if we end up there.
