2 Qualifying rounds are not such a bad thing. It gives us the chance to play the equivalent of pre-season against moderate opposition (hopefully, from a qualifying perspective) and some valuable ranking points.

I think we might scrape into Pot 2 if progressing through the Qualifiers. Right now we're ranked 71 in Europe. A number of teams ranked above us are either in CL or won't qualify at all. For future seasons we could use the leg up from next season's matches - we're currently 64th for the season after (though that would rise 2 or 3 places due to English teams' results next season) and then the rest would be down to us. A decent Europa season could see us rise into the mid 40s at least and the 4 games in the Qualifying rounds would help in that regard. Mid 40s are you're talking Pot 1 for Europa and potentially not the bottom Pot in Champions League (even possibly seeding in CL qualifiers).

We'll almost certainly be pot 2 in the groups (if we get there). I had a look pre the weekend & if all leagues finish as they are now & all favourites win cups & qualifiers etc then we're the top team in group 3.

In reality at least one team above us will slip up, moving is to pot 2.

One minor point, qualifying games get very little in terms of coefficient. So they don't really make much difference in terms of ranking.

do you know when the draw is made mate and am I right in saying all being well we would have 3 qualifying games then the qst game of the season then the 4th quakifitying game?

I'm assuming now the qualifying games will make up a huge part of our pre season.

so in order to win it we will have to play 19 games, basically another half a season on top lol

I reckon the last game vs Arsenal could be the fight for 6th place and the difference between going straight in or undergoing qualifications.

Arsenal have United next, they'll lose most likely. Then Soton away, then Stoke away and Sunderland before us.

That's 4 games in 2 weeks. I expect them to drop points and get 6-7 pts max. If that happens, they'll be on 66-67 pts, 8-9 above us.

We have very winnable games(Swans/Watford) before we play Arsenal. 9 possible points, which would put us 1 above Arsenal. We have to up our GD in case they get 7 pts.

It's a stretch but it's a possibility. Arsenal are in shambles. I've watched their last 4 games and ANY decently organised Prem team will tear them apart.

Don't worry, after we smash the RS home and away in the KO stage the players will be walking on air all the way to Lyon.

I'd settle for smashing them in a 5 a side friendly atm Dan! That's a lot of games isn't it for a tournament which makes squad recruitment and promotion from within absolutely crucial

Yes, we have a couple of chances to go straight into the Group Stages:

1. Finish ahead of Arsenal and then need Arsenal to not win FA Cup (as the FA Cup winners get higher priority)
2. If United win Europa and don't finish in top 4 - then the CL is 5 and the Europa reduced from 3 to 2 which would be Arsenal and Everton* in either order but both in Group Stages.

* might be Liverpool and Everton (ha ha)!

Still worth having.. 1 point per game in Q3 and 1.50 in Q4 (half for draws). Then 2+ for reaching the Group Stage. If we won all 4 games that would be 7 points which (before adding England's Coefficient which is worth a further 2.5 points+) lifts us from 71st to 58th (2017 Rankings) and a similar rise for any competition entry in 2018-19 (mid 60s to low 50s).

Max 2 pts from EL qualifiers.

These qualification points are not cumulative. ... The two points for the group stage of the Europa League are a minimum and will not be added to the points obtained during the group stage. So, all participating teams get at least some qualification or bonus points.

See Slovan Liberec. Entered @ Q3. Won all four qualifiers (securing the min 2 pts only). Then won one, drew one & lost 4 in groups (3 pts).

Still only got a total of 3 pts (not including country part). This was from the group. The qualifying points were superseded as they got more than 2 from groups. So qualifying wins actually added nothing.

I'd rather go straight to the group stage and I'm NEA about united.

I'd guess a lot would agree with you and I certainly wouldn't be unhappy with straight to the groups :) but in the long term, if we want to make CL ourselves then it doesn't help if we're competing with 5 teams with the additional attraction & money of CL, rather than 4.

Probably a bit petty considering how rich they are anyway. But in my eyes, the longer they are out of the CL the more chance we have of catching them.
