minor things that make you fume

£600 sounds high to me. We got the walls and ceiling of the landing done for £150.

Sometimes they quote crazy numbers cos they don't want the job (usually got something better lined up), but they'd take the job if you foolishly accept their crazy figure.
Every job is unique. every wall is infact different. whats the access like? Where can u mix the stuff and clean out .. wiilk the rooms be preped and covered ready to start or have i got to prep it all first..etc etc etc.

your quote would be miles off another quote for dozens of reasons

Also 'less £20 of plaster'

Koff.

Also, liability insurance, van, road tax, insurance, tools, putting up with smug teacher types thinking they're better than him cos they used to teach a few sprogs, pretending to laugh at your [Poor language removed] jokes cos he knows you're the kind of busy body to go over his work with a fine tooth comb before you'll pay him.

I hope you do it yourself and ruin your carpet.

You do it then genius. Problem solved.
Yeah I tried doing similar at a parents evening. Try explaining relativity, respiration, geological processes, chemical equilibria to a 14 year old knuckle dragger. I managed, frequently - it's a financially less rewarded skill, but it gives society the scientists needed to source, quarry, refine and produce the chemicals required to slap onto a wall. Also the scientists required to make the paints, steel, block work and other materials you take for granted. Let's not go down the route of medicine, energy, fuels, fertilisers, pesticides etc

Don't be defensive, I'm not denigrating plastering, re-read the text. It is a skill my father had, in the building trade in the 50s, before working his way into chemistry. To me it's a black art, and believe me if I could do it well enough I would do it. I'm simply comparing renumeration for 1 1/2 days work with 7.
My dad went in the other direction, because in his day plasterers didn't get paid as well.
The world is on its head.

£600 still sounds steep.

The world ISNT on its head because plasterers can earn more than teachers. The reason they earn more is because plastering is really friggin hard. And, get on this, if it wasn't, and anyone could do it, there'd be no money in it, and you'd be able to skim your own walls.

Please don't compare yourself to a scientist, because lets face ityou used to read a text book to children who literally didn't know if you knew what you were on about or not, if a plasterer turns up on site and tries to blag it he won't last an hour.

Just has a quote from a plasterer, friend if a friend etc. to skim 2 rooms. £600. Everybody says that's very reasonable.
Now I appreciate the skill needed in plastering, i've done some myself, and a good friend of new shoes is called challenge. Possibly it's a day and a half's work. £600 though less £20 with of plaster. It took me a week as head of department in a secondary school to earn that!
Honestly, what's the point of a 4 year university education?
My Grandad did it for 50 odd years. He was brilliant at it.

He used to ask me to have a go, I thought it would be a piece of piss, but I was absolutely terrible at it.

When he was older, though, his hands and knees went through years of work.

Wouldn't like to be doing it as a job, they deserve the money.

Also, if he is recommended, that's a plus. A cowboy would do it cheaper but probably mess the job up.

Hahahahaha. What an arrogant, conceited arsehole you are. I hope he rinses you for your 600 quid and does a scabby job. There'll be a lesson for you there Sir.

Do it yourself and then pay him twice as much to sort out your mess.

As for your 4 year Uni education. Obviously you didn't learn any respect for skilled tradesmen there.
Sake!
I have lots of respect for skilled tradesmen. More than society has for me, when with more degrees than a thermometer I could have collected a ruddy fortune in the city doing something useless for some giant corporation, but instead deciding to help build a better society for peanuts.

There is a bit of emperors new clothes in me though. I do absolutely everything in my own house that the law allows. Building work, tiling, plumbing. I've never used a garage for cars - not since I was ripped off as a youngster, and have fully restored and fitted out 2 boats and a camper van conversion. None of it is rocket science. None of it is difficult. None if it is worth a fraction of the prices I've been asked. Nor do I take as long as the professionals I've come across.

Good plastering, however, is beyond me. I acknowledge that, and I'm prepared to pay it to get a result. I was simply drawing the comparison in remuneration.

All of you attack dogs who have come running out to repress my opinion with your fervent indignation need to just pipe down and take a reality check. If a senior teacher has to work a week to pay for a day and a half of your services, you'd better show grovelling gratitude to them next time you're discussing your kids progress, and NEVER question why the quality of education is in a nose dive.

£1000 or less seems like a few days work to me so I'm happy to pay up, it has to be a £5,000 job for me to investigate where the money is going to.
