Goals for in the PL Era - A meaningless analysis

I remember that Villa game well because it was on TV. One of their goals involved two blatant handballs, including one from Baros. Terrible.

that's what i hate about referees, riley in particular was famous for it, they don't stand up for their decision nor do they have the balls to change it when it goes against them, he just runs away from all our players, he doesn't stand there and explain why he didn't give/see the handball, just ran away like the coward he was, bleak times.

So, another four goals today, to add to the four we scored against Hull, the six against Bournemouth, the four we put past City, not to mention ( though I'm just about to ), the three we put past WBA, Soton, Boro and S'land means we appear to be scoring for fun this season.

To put this into context, since football was invented  by Sky back in 1992, our best "Goals For" columns have been :-

  • 1995/96 : 64
  • 2013/14 : 61
  • 2009/10 : 60
  • 1999/00 : 59
  • 2015/16 : 59
  • 2016/17 : 57 ( to date, after 32 matches ).
So, with six games to go, we look on course to beat the 2013/14 number, and the "all time" (or, at least the version of "all time" that Murdoch's minions recognise ) record isn't out of reach.

Another three goals today, so it's time to update the above ...

  • 1995/96 : 64
  • 2013/14 : 61
  • 2016/17 : 60 ( to date, after 33 matches ).

  • 1999/00 : 59
  • 2015/16 : 59
With five games to go we look nailed on to beat the goals scored in RM's first season, and despite us playing Chelsea and Arsenal in those five games, you'd be brave to bet against us at least equalling the best tally in the PL of 64.

Oh, and we've won eight PL home games on the trot, which is, apparently, a "record", of sorts, for us in the PL.

Rom's getting closer and closer to taking out the 05/06 team by himself.

Funny you should mention that, there's been some analysis done on ToffeeWeb which shows that if Rom had been playing centre forward in the 05/06 team then we'd likely have won the league.

Interesting that we had a +22 goal differential in 2013/2014 and this season we're currently at +23.

Were we lucky in Martinez's first year or unlucky this year? We're still 15 points behind where we ended up in 2014 (72 pts).

We've won more games comfortably this year. In 13/14 we didn't really hand out any hidings we won a fair few by the odd goal. Whereas this season we've killed teams off in the later stages of games.
