Matthew Pennington

Still think sometimes it's easier if you are thrown in during the game as a sub as a young lad mate, not got the time to get nervous, and Pennington just looked nervous (contrast that to Browning for example in the derby when he came on and no nerves)

IF we had to go with a 3 man defence, then you play the player who in all but one game has done well their this season in Holgate and play Kenny at rb -or go back four and play a natural right back in Kenny not Holgate.

Pennington DID make some bad errors on all three goals, second being the most obvious one when he allowed Coutinho to easily turn the way he always wants too - is that a lack of experience or just a lack of nouse - who knows, but he had absolutely zero help from Williams in that game and all three goals where easily preventable had williams played like he does for Wales for example.

Gueye also didn't have the best of games and missed tackles basically left Pennington in one on ones, but then again i said before he isn't a holding midfielder in the Barry or schneiderlin sense who will protect all game, he's someone who disrupts a team with his energy and pressing
Good shout, I thought when I saw the line up he was going to play Pennington at right wing back & Holgate at the back. Like you said it made sense to stick Holgate in with Jags & Williams because he's played in a back three with them before. In addition he's got a bit of pace which the other two lack. The centre half position has been a problem all season and the signing of Williams has been a big disappointment to me.

Williams was signed as a stopgap to replace jagielka I think, unfortunately he's either deteriorated badly I a few months or is actually way worse than he was rated. Either way an expensive mistake meaning 10m down the drain as he a not good enough, big worry for me is that with current prices and us not having city like money, isctgat we can't afford too many if those , especially ones who resale value is zilch.

He's just not good enough. Mind you choosing a player to make his first start away at that lot is a bit odd.

But yeah, he's 22 so not exactly that young tbh. Can't see how he could ever be good enough for us. Yes coutinho is a good player but he was made to look like messi yesterday and he really isn't that good.

I think people generally overestimated him because of Wales fine run in the Euro's. He looks like a complete liability in a back four. The problem is he lacks pace and he's not commanding in the air. He needed both of those attributes to be a good replacement for Jagielka. Like you say an unfortunate waste of money.

Has played for us before mate, unless you meant first start this season, and he looked like he'd never ever seen coutinho play, he activey tried to show him onto his right side...

Saw a few people saying it was like pressing the triangle button on your keeper on FIFA to make him rush out for no reason - havent played that game in 15 years but get the drift of what they meant.

The exact thing I said at the time.
Who pressed the button for the keeper to run out for no reason.
It was like an online FIFA game when your connection is lagging that 3rd goal.
An absolute farce.

He's 22

If good enough he'd have been in the mix more (he has been injured yes) but even so I think we'd have seen more of him. He's been fit for a while now and hasn't even had a look in for the first team match squad until injuries forced him into the side

The fact Holgate was in our first team at 19 while Pennington was on loan at Walsall at 21 shows how far behind Mason he is for example

Some players take longer to develop yes but he won't make it in my opinion

Just hope he doesn't sit around till his mid 20's like mcleny is doing!

I did mean this season. Although crucial point being he isn't good enough.

Partially Down to nerves but there were no 'flashes' that indicated any greater ability.

I wish Matthew all the very best for the future and congratulate him on a well taken goal and also for having the gonads to have a go yesterday.

It's no bad thing to drop down a division or two just ask Jags.

He will make a decent living out of football just not at the highest level.

I really hope he proves me wrong.

Let's just say that I think he WILL prove you wrong...
