Active players can't say no without the risk of being banned domestically mate.
The major problem here is that he ignored not only the advice of our medical staff and manager , but the advice of the Irish medical staff as well. What an idiot. I'm done with him personally.

He was, and then he overreached in pre-game training.

No, he wasn't. He wanted to play, which is understandable, and Keane and O'Neill wanted him to play - again understandable.

However, all of them went against the advice of medical staff within Everton and the ROI's set-up.

...under the rules, players who get injured on World Cup duty have their salary paid by FIFA. If Ireland declared McCarthy fit and he then got injured in the warm up I dare say we should be putting a claim in. That means Coleman, Mori and McCarthy are being paid by FIFA.

We've outgrown this fella now. On his day he's good, but they are few and far between. You can always tell a standard of player by the clubs and/or leagues interested in them. McCarthy had Sunderland and Newcastle wanting him. We'd of been better with him gone and Sissoko in.

So retirement is not official it is just the player saying he does not want to be selected again....but if he is then he is obliged to play. I understand it is the rules but I still find it hard that a player must play even if he doesn't want to. So Ross Barkley can be selected for every game just to sit on the bench and accept it? Yet a club that pays wages will see the player ask to leave or run down a contract. Isn't the punishment for refusal just a 3 match club ban? Not trying to be pedantic or awkward I just find it difficult to believe that they have no real choice in the matter.
Retirement is official if filed with the respective FA.

...I don't care if you're Irish, English or Chinese, if you've not been fit to play for your club in the games immediately prior to an international then you shouldn't be available for call up.
Is right. Also for me this fella shows absolutely no respect for the club or the fans, wouldnt let him anwhere near a royal blue jersey again

Sorry eggs but i think the rules say they will pay as long as the injury was not a problem that was evident before the player joined up. I guess james has had this hammy for months on and off.

I am not sure it is. I think its just a general agreement but if the coach calls up a said retired player then it is possible if he refuses then he can serve a 3 match club ban. I think a player retiring is just requesting that he does not want to be selected and in general that is granted and he will not be selected but it is still only a request and not set in stone. I am just saying there is nothing official about it its just an understanding.

This was probably the pivotal game in Ireland''s qualification bid, it's not like he took a chance for a random friendly. I'd admire him for it, shows how much he it means for him to play for Ireland. It's at his own bodies detrement his attitude, playing for extended periods unerring Martinez while injured. There is a few in here who need their heads wobbled. Koeman and O'Neill could do with it to.

Remember John Stones loping off at the pit last year with upset tummy? Could you imagine McCarthy doing the same?

Ireland are entitled to do their own fitness check after FIFA changed the rules after every player at the likes of UTD got injured the day before heading off on international duty, Keane was a prime example actually admitting he doesn't play friendlies.

Hope your back and fit soon James.

I don't think that would apply to a player who has not been named in any recent squad. A player is under no obligation to play for his country but if one suddenly pulls out for no reason and is not in the medical teams opinion injured, then the FA can invoke that rule.
