James McCarthy

He's ongoing issues with his hamstrings that need sorting. Nobody has died. When these issues are sorted he will be a great asset to both Everton and Ireland. A simple conversation between ONeill and Koeman needs to take place to bury the hatchet on this. McCarthy also needs to listen to medical advice despite having an admirable desire to play all the time. Enough said.

Just watching Koeman talking about McCarthy, the fact he had carefully prepared a statement, pointedly mentioned it wasn't the first time he had acted against the advice of the medics all coupled with his general demeaner , strongly suggest to me we won't see McCarthy in a Everton shirt again.

Suspect you're right, and it's more than fair to come to that conclusion. If you are consistently going against medical advice and getting injured, thus making yourself unavailable for club duty, then there are plenty of midfielders out there that will happily come in and take your place, better ones too I suspect.

Sturridge pulls out of an England game because he doesn't think he's match fit and gets pelters. McCarthy passes himself fit to play for Ireland gets pelters for getting injured.

Basically, a no win situation for the player. Koeman is right, O'Neil has let the player down badly, doesn't help with Keane making sarcastic comments last time McCarthy had to pull out injured. I'm sure it was on his mind that the Irish Management team had already ridiculed him for reporting for international duty injured

He's completely left us up a creek knowing full well Snide and Barry are not available/100% and if he's actually done this against the advice of the medical team at the club that pays him so handsomely then good riddance tbh.

Lot of pressure on Gana and young Tom now, let's hope the lads can pull it off.

I disagree mate. And it has nothing to do with Ireland. I would say the same if it was a player who was putting England or any other country first.

He is contracted to Everton FC and has a duty/responsibility to us as regards actions he takes regarding his fitness and well being. He went into the International break having missed the last 2 games with ourselves. Apparently, the medical staff at the club told him that his injury would not heal in time for the Wales game. There must have been some truth in this as he didn't train until the day before the game. Keane had said if he did not train that day he wouldn't be considered. He did train, declared himself fit and then broke down in the warm up. Obviously he wasn't fit.

I would be angry with any player acting this way. What makes it worse is that he's done it before and was fully aware of the tension between club/country concerning this specific matter. To still go ahead with what he did shows total lack of respect for the club and its fans, especially at such an important moment in the season with the games coming up and with Schneids already injured.

This. In spades.

I can't get my head around this. Surely a player has the right to say 'no I don't want to play for you'. Surely they cannot be forced to play. So if England picked Scholes or John Terry after there decisions to retire from International football got selected then they would have to play?
Active players can't say no without the risk of being banned domestically mate.

You cant call up players who are officially retired. You can however call up "active players" , happened with matip
So retirement is not official it is just the player saying he does not want to be selected again....but if he is then he is obliged to play. I understand it is the rules but I still find it hard that a player must play even if he doesn't want to. So Ross Barkley can be selected for every game just to sit on the bench and accept it? Yet a club that pays wages will see the player ask to leave or run down a contract. Isn't the punishment for refusal just a 3 match club ban? Not trying to be pedantic or awkward I just find it difficult to believe that they have no real choice in the matter.

I think a player who isn't playing for his club due to injury is probably going to be alright , the ACN is I think a distraction because the players are clearly fit and withdrawing from the squad whilst FIFA want to protect the integrity of what is percieved as a smaller competition.

The Irish management open criticism of both the club and management is hardly conducive to dialogue. McCarthy has clearly been unfit and his international team have ignored this and the wishes of his parent club and Everton suffer again.

No doubt McCarthy carries a great deal of responsibility especially considering the position at Everton and the games coming up but a bit more class from both O'neill and Keane and things may have been a little less bumpier .
