Don't agree with that,he won't get in before gana, davies or sniders,he has had a couple of decent games, get shut upgrade.
The issue we have is there are 4 very good players fighting for 2, sometimes 3 positions. Then we have Barry, another very good player albeit now past his best, who Koeman will prefer in certain situations. Behind them we have Besic coming back from injury and Walsh in the U23s chomping at the bit for an opportunity.

Conversally we have no real playmaker, no back up for Rom. If Barks gets injured or is having a poorish game, we have practically zero creativity. With Del on loan and Bolasie injured we have little or no impact/plan B from the bench.

In short the squad is imbalanced and RK is now tinkering with format to try and find space for his best players which is affecting performance and results.

It needs addressing in the summer and I personally would sacrifice Macca to raise additional funds towards the cost of strengthening other areas of the squad.

One serious injury and you are back depending on the same players to play every game.
The aim is to be involved in maybe two or the competitions throughout the season to give enough games to everybody.
Midfield is now well covered but not overly so.
We need to strengthen other areas of the squad but not at the cost of midfield.

I can understand your argument mate but I'm looking at it from the other perspective of keeping everybody happy when they are all fit. Man Utd couldn't do that with Schneids which is why we were able to get him. The problem we have is that the first 4 are all too good. If Man U can't keep 4 CMs happy (5 if you include Pogba in that position) and they are still fighting on 4 fronts, what chance do we have. None of those top 4 will be prepared to play a bit part and I don't blame them.

I'll admit I'm also biased in that I believe Liam Walsh is a future star and he won't get the experience he needs at a crucial stage in his development because we are overloaded in his position.

Plus, as I said, the squad is seriously imbalanced at the moment and to address that I reckon we'll probably need to spend around £150m in the summer. We need two CBs, cover at LFB/LWB, a playmaker/attacking midfielder, another impact player/winger, and a support striker if Rom stays. I haven't even included a GK in that. Now we ain't got £150m net to spend and we'll need to try and raise at least £60m towards that. Funes Mori, Clevs, Niasse, Del and possibly Lennon may bring in around £40m if we're lucky. McCarthy would then be the one I would sacrifice as he, in my opinion, is ranked behind the other 3, and we could also fetch a lot more in the market than say Besic.

In the event of injury we will have Barry, Besic and Walsh as back up to Gana, Schneids and Davies. Plus Barks could play there, especially the new hard working version. You also need to bare in mind that, in theory, we will have a lot more options in the attacking third so RK wouldn't necessarily be looking to play 3 defensive minded midfielders in the same XI, especially if we play a back 3.

I doubt we will see much of Barry now. We have far better players now but his experience is invaluable. Hopefully offer him a coaching role.
Besic I have no idea.
McCarthy when fit is an excellent option as he can cover wing back too. I would be reluctant to lose him but we are stacked in that role. Baningime looks a top prospect and will be pushing for a 1st team spot too.
Walsh needs games too, hence why we need cup runs next season.

Ross apart, the pick of our midfield today.

We could have played the formation we did today and with McCarthy for Barry at least we would have competed.

Apart from injuries, he is back to Bobbys first season form.

Gana AND Morg better watch out.

He will start next week, wait and see.

A better inclusion than the aging Barry. Needs a run of games to get upto full speed. Where does leave Besic , surely one will be sacrificed.

Some serious vaulting needed here

When fit he offers a lot

The problem is that a lot of football fans, and clearly a lot on these forums don't see the bigger picture. They view things in the here and now and don't consider anything else like form, injuries, squad rotations, players ages etc. So at the start of the season with Barry playing well and Gana being the standout performer, they wrote McCarthy off and declared him rubbish and said he should be sold.

How wrong they were lol.

Barry has reached the same stage in his career as Jagielka. Great players in their day but no longer good enough for the starting 11. Besic is still no where near the first 11, so McCarthy is as very good squad player to have, which is evident in the selections from Koeman for the whole season who has often fit McCarthy in to the side in some way when possible, giving him a starting place at right back in August until he got injured.

I expect Koeman will use McCarthy mostly from the bench, because Gana and Schneiderlin are the favoured 2, with Davies having attributes that McCarthy just doesn't possess, but there will be games when McCarthy will be the right selection from the start. Unfortunately Koeman got it wrong selecting Barry ahead of him yesterday.

Besic needs a run of games with full fitness too though. Perhaps Koeman won't be keen on selling either if we somehow get Europe next season. The depth with McCarthy and Besic will be fully appreciated then.

Says the poster declaring McCarthy as the second coming because he had a reasonably effective 27 minutes in a game we lost...
