Matthew Pennington

Pennington is better than Duffy at this stage in their careers.
If it was me I would have him with the first team.
However, we are very keen to win Prem 2, which is seen has a stepping stone to recruit young talent, therefore they may wish to get that in the bag before he leaves u 23s.

Bit unfair that mate. The thread is about Pennington and so is the post. Obviously the lad hasnt seen much of him and his trying to get s handle on his ability/style. Nowt wrong with that.

Shane's been gone a bit too long mate imo.

Teasing Mikey innit? We know he loved Duffy :)

Thanks for the support but to be honest Andy is right and Bruce has hit the nail square on the head as I was just teasing Mikey. I think he has me on ignore any way so I'm wasting everyone's time really.

Cheers mate. I'd already been put in the picture but good of you to confirm. As I said to Andy, if you start asking for comparisons to Berahinio I'll know to ignore it.

I can see that happening, Pennington training with 1st team if it isn't happening already . Koeman made a point Nov/Dec time of getting Davies and Holgate training with the 1st team but sending them back to U23s to ensure they got game time, it worked ok. At both levels we haven't got much defensive cover, probably only Kenny and Pennington of the young defenders have enough experience to be considered for 1st team squad this season, and behind them it's hard to see any u18s, apart from Feeney who's current playing at U23s , able to step up to U23s. So net result is Pennington is going to be a busy boy hopefully training regularly with 1st team , playing for U23s andwith a bit of luck further PL game time.

Pennington only returned to fitness last month and in his first two games only played 45 minutes, before his injury pre-season he played and trained with the first team, had he not been injured I see no reason why it would not have still been the case.
However, his contract runs out June 18, so by the start next season, we will know better.

I think the other point in this is we have seen improvements in lots of the young players having trained with Koeman and benefitted from his insight. I hope he will bring Pennington on.

Are we of the opinion that Jags has fallen so far behind that he's now behind Pennington in the pecking order? Surely if that was the case, Pennington would have been on the bench rather than Jags in the past few weeks?

Given he's only just back from a long term injury and hasn't has a full game for the U23s yet think it'll be a while before he could oust Jags.

Indeed, early on Koeman seemed almost aloof from the youngsters , perhaps understandably as he was trying to get to grips with the seniors he had. But there's no doubt Holgate has improved considerably under his coaching and is a better defender than 9 months ago. He's hardly seen Pennington because of his injury, but the expectation has got to be that Koeman will work to improve him to 1st team squad member again.

In an earlier post I suggested Jags playing curve is on the way down , Pennington's is on the way up and they will eventually meet and cross. While I wouldn't write Jags off just yet, Pennington's injury and lack of game time would have counted against him being on the bench recently. He played a full 90 mins at a wet and windy Southport the other night so he's getting there.

What you tend to find with modern football fans is an opinion can become gospel quite quickly. The "Koeman hates youth" perspective was one such opinion. All evidence prior to him coming here does my fit with that. That has continued this year.

He does hold to a high standard and is quite unforgiving. I think you are right as well to say he wanted to see the seniors. I think the Watford game marked the moment he's seen enough. Leicester at home probably cemented it.

He's not going to put up with senior players not doing their jobs over a longer period. If you take a lad like Mori who does ok, and could still turn it around but if he hasn't by May I suspect he will be gone and maybe Pennington will get a run in spite of him.

Alongside the ruthlessness though is a very good coach. Davies has spoken about learning the tactical part of the game and how to intercept. He has really put that to good use and benefitted as a player. This feels a good balance to me.

As for Pennington he is a very bright lad and I think he will soak up Koemans wisdom. I prefer him to Galloway and Browning who have more on the physical side, but Pennington reads the game well. I think Koeman will improve him significantly.

Alongside that the win against Bournemouth last year, aside from the foul he should have had was a fantastic performance. There is a lot to work on and I really like the look of him.
