MLS is not quite EPL

Player Valuation: £750k
We have enough Yanks here that have allegiances to stateside teams; I figured we could make a thread to discuss all the moves of players, teams, etc... especially given the questions marks surrounding the expired CBA & unions.

I'm also interested in hearing what players your teams are looking at, have signing on the horizon, etc. :)

Seattle just announced this morning the affirmed signing of Blaise Nkufo! He will be joining the squad in summer.

I know there are rumblings of Henry to NYRB after the WC... any RBNY fans here that have heard anything?

RSL wins the Luis Gil sweepstakes; I think it took a first and a IP slot to get him. Worth it?

What did/are the Fire going to do with their slot now that Blanco is gone?

Did Columbus and GBS iron out their issues?

Chivas has been linked to a Costa Rican striker....

Think that's a great deal by Seattle. Don't think he's good enough for the top leagues, but one of the very best strikers in the Dutch Premier division.

thanks for posting that; if you have any other information about Blaise, feel free to share. :pint:

Personally I'm excited about the prospect of guys like Nkufo, Theirry Henry, Raul, whomever coming to the MLS for their twilight tours. It brings big names to the MLS while still giving these guys something to play for.

And most non-discerning americans will have never heard of them... you'll hear 'hey! it's the guy from the gillette commercial with Roger Federer and Tiger Woods!'.

 True.

I guess the thought process is you'll get a lot of soccer fans here that currently aren't MLS fans (trust me there are plenty) to start watching MLS.

I have 4 friends that watch EPL, Serie A, La Liga religiously, but won't watch MLS at all. If we get more guys they followed over there to play here, you'll undoubtedly increase viewership.... Not to mention the masses of fans who probably don't know who these players are, but feel the excitement around the buzz of bringing in a star international. The Sounders experienced a lot of this with Ljungberg last year here. Not many were familiar with his career or accolades (in fairness, not everyone watches EPL), but his arrival here was a huge deal for all, even got local news coverage. Can't remember the last time a MLS player signing generated a spot on the local news  (y)

woohoo, I had missed that pickup by the Sounders! Nice way to start my hump night at work!(y)

I can't see Henry leaving for RBNY this year he's supposedly having a good season at Barca. Maybe in 2012.

Despite being 35 I could see GBS starting for quite a few prem teams.

I'll speak for my Houston Dynamo.

We've lost Clark and Holden to Europe which hurts. Hurts big.

Good news is that Geoff Cameron will slot into midfield (attacking) and Mulrooney will resume playing at DM for Clark.

Eddie Robinson is back healthy and will partner Boswell at CB. I see our starting lineup looking something like this:

.......................Onstad.......................

Hainault......Boswell....Robinson....Chabala

Mullan......Mulrooney....Cameron.....Davis

...........Ching...........Landin..................

First Subs:

Oduro - F
Weaver - F
Ashe - M
Barrett - D

I'd still like to see us sign another good allround midfielder though.

Unfortunately my beloved Revolution seem to be stagnant, AGAIN...

We traded away one of the best holding MFs in the league for a talented, but very injury prone defender and a stop-gap GK (yes, I know there was more to the deal than that, but nothing that will impact us this season).

We picked up an unknown Senegalese MF with a comical name (Niouky Desire) who played for a team in Africa that Google doesn't even know about... and that's about it.

Nicol usually does well in the draft, so we'll see how our picks pan out, but I hate having to rely on lightning striking every year with our draft choices! We haven't filled glaring holes at forward, a-mid, and left wing, and are going to struggle to put the ball in the back of the net because of it.

As an aside, I wonder why Chicago is delaying on signing Collins John. I know he's been a bit, uh, unmotivated let's say, for a few years, but he has been saying the right things in the press, doing very well on trial, and would seem to be a natural fit to pair up with McBride again given their familiarity from their Fulham days together. Unless he really is a locker room cancer, pull the trigger, Klopas!

Funny that with ECS & Goal Seattle, you find your Sounders news here eh?

Not going to lie, I think you guys got whacked the worst this offseason just by virtue of "losing" Clark & Holden... although I will say there probably is some sort of parental-type pride on watching them elevate to a higher league, right?

I would be hurting if we lost two of our best players. This is just a testament to your amazing depth & quality there Bill. (y)

Well you don't always have to be big players in the free agency/transfer window market to have success on the pitch. Heard you guys are going with FieldTurf this year. Thoughts on that? I just hope they remove the lines - no offense to your club, but watching matches at Gillette was the worst thing in the world. I kept thinking Montero was going to score a touchdown.

huh??
why do i feel left out... :(
Do you have a Major League Soccer team? This is a thread for the soccer league in the United States. :)

MLS news - you guys all know that several EPL & other Euro clubs are considering buying MLS teams, right? I guess the biggest current story is that of Man City trying to scope the MLS market:
Major League Soccer (MLS) Rumors – For the time between the games Blog Archive EXPANSION: Manchester City look to expand in America

I think it works for both sides; the top Euro clubs get inroads to farming out of our country, which will undoubtedly produce better quality in the future. We get exposure to their clubs & a partnership where we can train & send youth through their academies would be excellent.

Unfortunately my beloved Revolution seem to be stagnant, AGAIN...

I try to follow the Revs, but they seem so freaking boring to me.

I do follow the MLS in general but haven't developed a rooting interest.

Didn't Nkufo score against the US in a friendly? Or played very well, I can't remember.

That's the main reason the Dynamo have had the success they've had is due to the depth.

Kinnear could rotate his squad to a certain degree between the USOC, MLS, and Superliga/CCL and we wouldn't miss a beat in league play.

But yes, I'm very happy to see Holden and Clark move to Europe as they've earned it. I'm looking forward to seeing how Clark does as he hasn't played yet, still getting over an injury.

Toronto FC....Back line not solid, no strikers that can find the back of the net and a below average midfield at current performances, but can do better.

Another season without playoffs I think I will predict, shame for the fans. But hey, with de Guzman and De ro in midfield, who knows, things might just click. Hoping rather than expecting though.
