Ross Barkley

Subtly that's what I was leaning towards and perhaps it may be a catalyst for his progression, nevertheless I think it would still incite opinion.

I've always been an admirer of Ross and his potential talent, although equally I've not shirked from questioning his development, or lack of.

If in his fourth season he's still not able to consistently warrant a position in our starting XI (a mid table team?) then what does that say?

Basically says for whatever reasons that he hasn't developed and gained the level of consistancy that is required to make the most of his natural talent, next 6 months or so is huge for the lad, 23 and been around for a good few years now and we still wonder what his position is and what system he can suit, the really top players can adapt, if he can't then don't honestly see him here long term.

A shame but only so many years you can keep talking about potential and someone being a propsect for before it comes time to realise he is what he is.

He's had more 7 or higher rated games than 5 or below this season from the stats I've seen. I think too many read the rags and don't look into the facts or use their eyes.

He has clearly improved, he is very far from crap. He is an excellent footballer and is only 23. There are others in the team that aren't performing to their potential but clearly Ross has become the media Scape goat and they twist every word Koeman says about him. Would Everton be weaker without him? Yes, most definitely.

I believe he will fulfill his potential and I hope it's at Everton. As I said before, let's judge the lad when more quality is added to the side. Until then, let's try supporting him rather than driving him down.

I don't say he he is crap. I only say he is not the player some people think he is. He just lacks some qualities to be a fantastic number 10 or number 8. If we can find a number 10 with vision and someone who can give a killer pass we would definitely be better without Barkley. I just don't think there is so much potential as you think, he's missing footballbrains.

My ol' man threw a question to ponder yesterday evening: if we sign a central midfielder, playmaker and winger - will Barkley still play?

Talking purely hypothetically, if we sign players such as Schneiderlin, Gabbiadini and a number ten then you'd expect them all to start regularly.

You'd expect a a partnership of Schneiderlin and Gueye so he wouldn't move further back, therefore would he move to a wider position again?

And so much for Ron to get "the best out of him"

You're right mate, but the super blooz will see this as "stick" and hound you for trying to destroy him.

And there we go.

As others have said, I'm confident that if surrounded by better players he'll do well. We're utterly awful at the moment.

Barkley suffers from not being able to consistently beat three men and curl one in the top corner.

Our style of play does him absolutely no favours and didn't under Martinez either. Opposition teams don't need to worry about Barry, Gueye and McCarthy which means they can get plenty of players around the areas Barkley wants to operate in.

I can't think of many players who would thrive in the role Barkley has to play for us from this league. Hazard probably.

Completely agree imagine we signed pogba from united on a free he would be playing league one now instead he went and played with Vidal & pirlo in a midfield 3 & became the most expensive player in the world.
Everton football club will need to take a fair portion of the responsibility if Ross doesn't not make it just imagine he came through the ranks at somewhere like Bayern Munich anyone truly believe he would still have as many flaws in his game.

Yep.

I said in an earlier post that you'd be hard pressed to find a 23 year old midfielder who is single handedly carrying a side similar to ours in European football.

Everyone likes those stats when hes compared to Gerrard, Lampard, and Scholes at his age. But what they forget is each player had a) a great man manager behind them b) world class players around them c) champions league football.

Of course Ross isn't going to develop here at the moment when the players hes compared to were in a totally different environment.

The best thing would be for a spurs or arsenal to buy him cheap in the summer

So true. Having Martinez as his coach for three years will have done nothing for his development. Doubt he did anything apart from tell Barkley what an amazing talent he is.

It's also flavour of the month to slag Barkley off for everything at the moment in the media which doesn't help his confidence. The pundits (like a lot of our fans) want him to be scoring 25 yard screamers week in week out and if he doesn't then he's not affecting the game enough.

To be honest its a flaw with youth development across English football.
