Sims did well against Everton last Sunday, but really it was all about how bad we were rather than how good Southampton and Sims were.

If truth be told ...just after that one performance and I never saw or heard of him before , I wasn't hugely impressed. He played with the energy and enthusiasm that you would expect from a young lad making his premiership debut , but , I am not sure I saw anything in him that would make me wish he signed for us.

I was being a bit playful mate. To be honest, I don't think there's much between the two academies when it comes to producing players playing regular Premier League football.

In recent years they've seen Sterling, Ibe and Flanagan come through, in some shape or form, the academy / youth setup.

We've seen Barkley and, to a lesser extent, Stones.

There might be others, from either their's or ours, but I can't think of any off-hand.

We'll never get the answer, but here's the big question on the subject:

Are youth players not given a chance because the manager thinks they aren't physically capable of competing in the PL in terms of skill and athletic ability? Or are they not given a chance because the manager thinks they aren't mentally capable of competing in the PL?

If making a mental error or bad decision means a player isn't ready, then no one would be playing in the PL.

Galloway and Holgate were signings and have looked at worst above average in the league for us.

Davies with his cameos has been one of the best on the pitch with motm against norwich.

No one is saying theyre as good as rooney, but they can play.

I would include Browning in the list of 'possibles'. No others when they have had their (admittedly) limited chances have overly impressed.

Ronald Koeman says Dominic Calvert-Lewin took his chance to impress when training with the first team to deserve being rewarded with his Everton debut.

The teenage forward signed from Sheffield United in the summer and has helped fire the Under-23s to the top of their league table, as well as earning his first England youth caps.

And this month his season got even better when he was called upon from the bench to make his senior Blues bow in the 2-1 comeback victory against Arsenal.

Speaking at Finch Farm to evertontv, Koeman explained how he was happy to throw the youngster into the action as his side sought a late winner and explains the potential he has seen so far.

“We know he’s a talented young player and he’s done enough sessions training with the first team to show his quality,” the Toffees boss said.

“He’s young but strong. He can play as a number nine or more wide. He had an impact in the last 10-15 minutes [against Arsenal] which is good because it’s always nice for a young player to make his debut.

“He needs to improve but he’s a good boy who likes to work hard and learn. He’s listening to every member of the staff and he has a big future coming up at Everton.”

If you are using England and Manchester United's all time top scorer as the bar for good then you are probably being a little harsh on the likes of Barkley, Rodwell and Anichebe all of whom are international players with decent Premier League careers and millions in the bank.

He got a chance and didn't do himself any harm - didn't crash and burn...he may have earned that chance, that's up to him. But somebody still has to select him.
Meanwhile back at EFC...If Koeman never buys a ticket, he'll never win the young player raffle.

DCL is a start...for both him and us.
