I wasn't suggesting brummies and geordies were southerners. I was suggesting that golf is one of the very few words in english that everyone seems to pronounce the same. You've obviously not listened properly then, or haven't heard someone from the home counties say it. And how long have brum and/or newcastle inhabitants been classed as southerners??
I've lived in Sussex, Cardiff and Bristol, and travelled regularly to Norwich, Oxford, various parts of Essex, Gloucestershire and Hertfordshire - everyone says "golf" as if it rhymes with "Rolf" - which is exactly the same way every Geordie, Brummie, Scouser, Manc and Scot I've ever met says it too. I'm intrigued by the alternative pronunciation you've suggested - I've just never heard it.
