Ross Barkley

Besic gave the most gutless, pathetic, un-arsed 45 minutes i've seen from an everton player in my lifetime last season home to Arsenal.
He was carrying an injury in that game. No different to Barry yesterday. Neither should have played.

However while I have been a fan of Besic's in the past. At best he is only challenging for a starter position and now with an ACL I think it's unlikely he will make it.

I think we would be best to think of moving on. Our CM is weak. Gana papered over the cracks but we really should have strengthened more in the window.

The problem with Barkley and Rom is neither want to press. Rom can get away with it because he's a striker who scores loads of goals and brings so much when we have the ball. Barkley on the other hand brings very little that anyone playing his position would bring. I can't remember the last chance he created for someone else in open play. The sad truth is I'm not sure we can afford to play both Barkley and Rom in the same team due to their defensive contribution especially against teams that like to play with the ball.

I think Barkley needs to be dropped and forced to play his way back into the team. It's obviously not working subbing him just for a half. He puts in one half decent defensive performance and then the next week he's back to form.

He was poor yesterday but no worse than 6 or 7 players I could mention.

Looking on yesterday there were so many players hiding and not willing to show for the the ball.moan at Barkley but in his defence he showed for the ball and was never hiding.

I would rather a player play poorly but showing for the ball and trying to influence the game, than players like say Mirralles who just hides and shows no commitment

Somebody pointed out in an earlier post that maybe Ross is having some kind of mental reaction to the death of Sid Benson?

At the risk of repeating myself as I've said this umpteen times before, but Ross - in my opinion - could/would benefit from an off-field mentor, to help him get his head straight about how to play in certain situations and at various stages of the game.

In my opinion, the club could do a whole lot worse than approach Colin Harvey to be just such a 'counsellor' to and for Ross to discuss the game and learn from.

Colin came through in similar fashion to Ross and others older than me will recall he suffered some abuse as a youngster. But Colin had mental as well as physical strength, and dare I say it in Harry Catterick, a manager who really believed in him.

I am firmly and resolutely of the opinion that Colin Harvey should be approached and offered the chance to help Ross become the player that we all want him to be.
It couldn't hurt.

Don't know whether this has been showed in here but a good response from Koeman about Barkley.

'You don't ask me about Coleman' snaps Blues boss

Ronald Koeman responded angrily to questions about Ross Barkley's below-par display following Everton's first Premier League defeat of the season.

The Blues lost 1-0 at Bournemouth thanks to Junior Stanislas' 23rd minute strike, with Barkley one of several disappointing performers in the Everton side at the Vitality stadium.

Asked afterwards for his thoughts on the England international's contribution, Koeman said: "I don’t answer that question.

"Why? Because why do I need to explain or always talk about one or two players. You don’t ask me about Coleman… What I don’t like is that every game I need to explain the performance of Barkley.

"Every week I get that type of question."

Koeman was clearly unhappy with his team's sluggish first half showing, and admitted as much in no uncertain terms.

"It wasn’t good enough," he said. "First half, Bournemouth were the better team. They had more aggression, won more second balls and put balls in the channels.

"They pressed well. It was difficult for us to find our play in the first half.

"I was not surprised by Bournemouth - I know they can be strong and we knew the way they play. It’s always about preparing yourself in football and they started much better than we did. That was disappointing after 45 minutes.

"In the second half we showed what we needed to do, good reaction of the team, some chances - not necessarily big opportunities, but we were the dominant and more dangerous team.

"It’s a pity because you need to start like this."

Everton were without influential defender Leighton Baines on the South Coast, after he suffered a hamstring injury last week and was not risked.

The Blues boss said it was a "close-call" whether Baines will be fit for Friday's clash with Crystal Palace at Goodison.

They also had to substitute Gareth Barry in the second half, with the midfielder playing from the start despite suffering an ankle injury in training on Thursday.

Koeman said: "He did not train yesterday and was doubtful for today. I was very happy with what Tom Cleverley showed on Tuesday. He’s really the player that I tried to bring into that time of the game.

"If you know Barry the fact he didn't train explains why we had to make the change."

Glad Koeman reacted to the question about Barkley as he did.

...I can understand the press fixation regarding Barkley, he's supposed to be one of our main men just like every team has it's high profile players. Nobody complains if he has a great game and the press highlight it so when he continues to underperform it's bound to result in questions.

Barkley needs to positively impact games on a week by week basis to be worthy of a top player tag, unfortunately he has failed to do that. It's not a coincidence that he's not linked with moves to truly top clubs.

It's also because he's ours and to a lesser degree England's big hope. No one expects Mirallas or Lennon etc to become world beaters so a poor performance is just a poor performance but when a young player has a poor game it's harder to take because it's just another piece of evidence to go into the "he won't be a world beater" pile.

It happens to all young players. I suspect he will either make it this season or be sold possibly to someone like City to bring up their home grown quota.

I don't mind his extra touches in the box most of the time. He's a brilliant dribbler and a lot of the time he beats people and something happens off the back of it. As usual with Ross though, it's a question of when to do it and when not to, and when he's low on confidence he makes the wrong choice. I don't think he needs to be told what to do on the ball, just let him play. Off the ball is a different matter though. I thought something had clicked when he talked about Rooney advising him to "always be on the move", because he was for a couple of games, and he scored a couple of goals because of it, but then just stopped and went back to standing around. His defensive workrate is getting better though, which to be fair isn't particularly difficult given he started from zero.

If he worked harder off the ball and in defence then his errors in attack wouldn't be as marked. Sometimes it won't be his day so he needs to learn to roll his sleeves up. He can have bad days, but his bad days shouldn't be so pathetically bad where his standards fall off a cliff.

After all the debates on Rooney and his eventual dropping, it's laughable really when you look at all the players that can play at 10 instead of him. The issue at Everton is, where are the other 10's to drop Barkley? He hasn't got any competition really.

Too much rich homie Quan, not enough Nas, what you saying Browns.

Just needs someone(hopefully Koeman)to get in his head and sort him out,so,so frustrating to watch him struggling,a big, strong lad,he has the lot really to go all the way to the very top,and really it is only tinkering and minor adjustments that need to be rectified and the kid would be flying again imho.
