I just came here from reading the Great Bake off thread in the Ale House. When I read that quote for a second I thought AI had taken over our forums.
I do love how this Barry thread started out 118 pages back (I'll spare the poster's blushes):
"Getting tired of this fella, too old and slow to be in the heart of our midfield. Doesn't shield the back 4 and gives away too many daft free kicks. Unless Martinez punts him he'll lose us points week in week out."
Barry is quality. I always rated the guy. When he signed it was like the day I got a job QA'ing the BBC's Olympic coverage (ie. watching sport and getting paid), i.e. a massive result.
Players get old, and Barry does give away position and fouls when he gets beat for pace. But his reading, passing, consistency and influence for younger players has godda be worth holding onto for a season or so more. Gueye will help atone and learn from Barry and Ross should learn a thing or two soon, too.
Critically I'd maybe ask for a bit more around their box from Gareth Barry, the old streaky left-footers have a way of nicking a few goal or two each season imho - especially whilst Leighton gets back to his best.
Thoughts?
