I think his recent performances, his lovely face which looks like a snuggly teddy bear coupled with arnold schwarzeneggers big, square jaw, and the fact that Leighton has been slightly disappointing appearance-wise has just made Gareth my front runner for the Everton-player-i-would-turn-instantly-gay-for-award

A few games to go yet Mate, do not be in a rush to transgender.

I like the sentiment but I don't feel we've had a genuine contender since Arteta left. He gave me wood

The man is so reliable England have called him up to their Test cricket squad!

Oh, Batty. Gareth Batty.

Barry has been great and really suits playing alongside Gueye.

He will probably want another 2 years so while I think another contract is appropriate it is prob best leaving it as long as possible.

I just came here from reading the Great Bake off thread in the Ale House. When I read that quote for a second I thought AI had taken over our forums.

I do love how this Barry thread started out 118 pages back (I'll spare the poster's blushes):

"Getting tired of this fella, too old and slow to be in the heart of our midfield. Doesn't shield the back 4 and gives away too many daft free kicks. Unless Martinez punts him he'll lose us points week in week out."

Barry is quality. I always rated the guy. When he signed it was like the day I got a job QA'ing the BBC's Olympic coverage (ie. watching sport and getting paid), i.e. a massive result.

Players get old, and Barry does give away position and fouls when he gets beat for pace. But his reading, passing, consistency and influence for younger players has godda be worth holding onto for a season or so more. Gueye will help atone and learn from Barry and Ross should learn a thing or two soon, too.

Critically I'd maybe ask for a bit more around their box from Gareth Barry, the old streaky left-footers have a way of nicking a few goal or two each season imho - especially whilst Leighton gets back to his best.

Thoughts?

I think there has definitely been a little short-sightedness in relation to Barry.

Yes, at times under Martinez he was exposed but that was because of the kamikazee football we played.

Koeman is getting the best out of him because he keeps his full-backs 10 yards further back and doesnt have his centre-backs roaming forwards.

He is playing superbly and is in the team on merit.

None of the players have 'touched' me in quite that way.

Maybe my loss, (maybe theirs!), but if there was one guy I'd pay good money to see in an Everton shirt it'd be Duncan Ferguson chucking somebody on the floor again or (throttling or punching them). Teary-eyed respect to you DF. And the one-nil against Utd with Moyes in his chav jacket.

Anyhow, back to Gareth, I bet he scores or gets an assist on Saturday.

I actually think Barry has been getting forward a bit more to be honest. I think Koeman likes us to vary our play and don't think he's that keen on both FBs bombing on all the time like previous managers. As long as we keep ourselves covered defensively I think most players are given license to get forward. In fact I think it's expected. Think Barry's scored already hasn't he?
