If they wanted to keep him they would've offered him a new contract.
Why would they need to do that? He's under contract for another 3-4 years. If they wanted to keep him surely that is enough.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here, but if Juve were interested in Kone I'd say he'd probably pick them too...
I don't like players handing in transfer requests and such but it's difficult to argue against his reason why. He was promised a new contract numerous times and then when Moyes came in he wasn't offered one anymore. I wouldn't stand for that in my job either tbh

Difference is Juventus didn't want him, so he did string us along. Think there would not have been as much angst against him, if he would have said weeks ago, that he had no interest in moving to Everton. Then we could have moved on to other targets, Witsel done us no favours whatsoever.
I wish we would have done the same to Gibson.
Maybe, but the money in Italy isn't great, they had their day and England is the top league in Europe
Remember Lescott, Moyes loves CB's handing in transfer requests....
I'd rather a player didn't do it but he may have said it off the record and Sunderland hierarchy said you'll have to hand in a transfer request to appease the fans..who knows
Hopefully we see some real progress on this over today/ the weekend.the guys been there 6 months and whilst he was instrumental in keeping them up they may want to get another season out of him before bumping his money up. I think that's fair enough. I can kind of understand Kone's position too - he was made promises which he now feels have been broken but handing in a transfer request seems extreme....yes, he might be forcing a revised contract rather than a move but there are two sides to every story and Sunderlands version of his contract position might be different to his.

Probably told him to hand one in if he wants to leave, otherwise they'll have to pay him a (laughable but true) loyalty bonus if they sell him without him explicitly requesting a transfer. Ps what contrasting stories Sunderland's Kone and our Niasse are.
Niasse - bought in Jan for 13m and we can't even give him away
Kone - bought in Jan for 5m and they'll receive more than treble what they paid for him
