Keeper necessity

Is Leno better than Horn?

Leno is just ridiculously unlucky that Neuer is around, because he would be the german number one and probably a lot more people would be clued up on how good he is.

Leno could goto anyone and be a top class keeper - if we are looking for a keeper who could potentially stay for years and win us games, Leno is definitely that keeper.

Tough sell to get him, think if he leaves there will be a LONG queue to get him.

Best spend big on a keeper, as we go desperately need it. Throw 15m at one of those German keepers. No doubt the RS poached the best-of-the-rest among the German goalkeepers by signing the fella they did a few weeks ago, while we ummed and arred regarding a new manager and will now need to wait until after the Euros for him to even have a look at the squad, never mind decide which positions he needs to strengthen in. Typical Everton.
I agree. Id be happy if they spent up to 20m on a keeper to get a top notch one that be here for 4-6 years

Precisely. It would be a hard sell but give him top wages and who knows. Van der saar joined fulham...

Choice of anyone linked so far e.g mata or leno its leno every time. World class.

Definitely, i do think its possible. Premier League, more money, more competition, more exposure, there is lots of plus points that we could sell to him to get him in. Especially with the vision of the club at the moment, every seems a little surreal and i fully believe at the moment (which is weird) we could go and get him.

Though, i would have mata in a heart beat - on his game, and played in the correct positions, one of the best playmakers around.

I just wanted to address the GK situation. For those of us lucky enough to see Southall in his prime i suppose we consider that to be the level of keeper we want. Even after he had put on alot of weight he was immense during 95 and 96 seasons when we won the FA cup and had Kanchelskis and other top players. Without him i doubt we would have picked up half the trophies we did.

The next level down would be Martyn who we could have had many years earlier but for Johnson messing up the signing. He was an immense keeper and probably saved Moyes bacon as we would probably have been relegated without him.

We had a few keepers of course that potentially seemed like they 'may' be good for us like Myhre, Ruddy and Turner + highly rated Wright and Simonsen.

This brings me all the way down to "Captain America" Tim Howard. We all know he was decent for us for most of his career but dreadful last season and definitely cost us a lot of points which in the end may have been the different between a happy squad getting results and what happened with him in goal.

When we look at the top sides with Courtois, De Gea, Cech and Lloris its quite clear that to compete at that level we need a Southall or Martyn and not any of the others weve seen in the past 30 odd years

This brings me to the links to Krul, Skekelenburg and Mandanda. None of these are close to having the same quality as pur rivals keepers. Mandanda seems to be a popular choice from some who see hes won awards in France...well, so what?? Is he on the same level as Lloris ? No, hea more of a grobelaar who would be useless in this league.

I have seen alot of posts advocating the above and other signings theyre cheap or have release clauses...so what??

To be the best you need to have the best players and we shouldnt be wasting time here with only Robles on the books...Top keepers who would consider us a step up like Leno, Rico and Butland are out there and its imperative we sign one of them.

Heck, the RS just signed Karius whose going to be top class but not at the level of the above 3. Koeman may need to assess the squad but surely he knows how important a keeper is, i mean he did sign Forster!!!

Please, lets aim for the best in this key position...i dont want the stress of having a sub-standard keeper in goal. I want to enjoy games like when we had Southall and Martyn where i could relax.

I suppose we cant realy fault the thinking or the sentiment - but in the same vein that means we want Dixie Dean back up front smashing them in the net all season.

Reality is bound to be slightly different and whilst we can all look back and talk about the gems, there are far more examples of mediocrity and dross out there than we probably want to remind ourselves about - suppose only time will tell what we end up with and the impact they may have. We can absolutley aim for the best and times are changing for us by the looks of it, but that means there has to be a transition to where we think we should be - probably not an overnight flash.

Leno, Mata and Schneiderlin for 15m, 25m and 20m.

60m for those three and what a huge improvement that'd be to the squad. Their wages would even be more than offset by Pienaar/Howard/Osman/Hibbert/Kone/Niasse/McGeady being sold.

I like Joel but i cant see how hes as good as other keepers mentioned? Who did you mean?
You even say yourself here that Krul, Skekelenburg and Mandanda are not good enough;

So Krul, Skekelenburg and Mandanda then.

Lopes came behind Mandanda for keeper of the year last season so a bit concerning. Ederson ive not seen really bar couple of highlights i think but dont think hes been in the Brazil side yet (unless in this copa?).

Thats the word ive been looking for,for Mandanda, Erratic. Seems like Grobelaar to me. Id prefer a keeper who when the opposition attacks we just sit back and relax...

Ederson has been in the squads of late but he's unfortunate that Alisson (just signed for Roma) is better and also very young. Always impressed when I caught a Benfica game on BT Sport.

To be fair I think everyone can name at least 5 realistic keepers better than the ones that have been linked but doesn't mean the management team think they're suitable for their needs.

Plus I think people are overestimating our takeover a little. I know we can offer wages a lot of other teams now can't (to a degree) but to some players the CL pull is stronger for now.

I like Krul. He's been unfortunate to play for that Newcastle team but he's often their best player when I watch them.

I think people are saying no to him because he's unfashionable.

Newcastle just signed Selz with Benitez saying Krul and Elliot are injured meaning they had to buy. Can't see us going after an injured keeper this close to start of pre-season.

I didn't ever see Krul coming off anyways mate - he can't start training for at about another month.

I think it'll be Stekelenburg as back up with another as no1. Mandanda or hopefully we are looking elsewhere too.
