Where/when did it go all wrong for both Liverpool teams?

You have to remember football is a game of fine margins,if Lineker had his lucky boots at Oxford chances we would have done the double,Brock managed to clear the ball, our most successful manager sacked,Hornes weak shot gets saved we get relegated and spend years down in the lower divisions
The same can apply to United, not win the cup and Fergie sacked none of Scholes Beckham etc guven a chance by the new manager thats how easily and quickly things can change

I hate them, I want them relegated. But I know the usefulness of a good local rival. So I want them to be good but not better than us. Hasn't happened for years but who knows.
Fair enough.

This thread is more about a general Liverpool v Manchester football rivalry.

True mate.
But times have changed and those two are now spending on one world class player what both Liverpool teams are likely spending in a whole transfer window.
That's some huge gerrymander to overcome.

To be fair, Manchester is really just United for the past 20 years and that was because of Ferguson.
Yet, despite their domestic dominance, how many UCL did they win?
Have patience my friend, Pep and Mou are not going to blow anyone out of the water.

Yes a big difference in spending power, but look how much United spent the last couple of seasons and yet without De Gea chances are they finish mid table spend 50 million wisely and its the same as spending 200 foolishly

There is no particular "Fotball rivalry" between the cities of Liverpool and Manchester.

By and large EFC and the Manc teams don't get bothered about one or other doing well.

Ditto Manchester City and Liverpool.

What there is is a "rivalry" which was manufactured in Kopite brains in the mid/late 70s when they could not handle the fact that despite them winning all before them, United were regarded by the national press as a much more glamorous and bigger club.

So they started obsessing about this.

It is pathetic.

Even today the United/RS fixture means more to the Cukt than it does to United.

For Everton it was clearly Heysel.

For RS - I don't really know. They were still at least in the reckoning for the title every year and I don't feel like that ended until Hicks and Gillett ran out of money. Now they have meddling owners who don't know or don't care about the differences between American and European sporting culture.

Sky tv and City winning the lottery

City winning the lottery was not where it went wrong for us, that had happened long since, but what it did do was put a giant obstacle in our path back to the top and has made it so much harder for us and indeed Spurs to mount a top four challenge.

Before City it was the era of United, Arsenal and Chelsea passing the title between them with the RS making up the numbers in the top four.

Everton and Spurs usually on the periphery, in fifth and sixth.

Then as Liverpool started to fade and the task should have been "easier", Manchester City win the lottery and they become a top four stalwart.

Sitting here wondering at the moment what happened and how we find ourselves in this situation.

I'm watching both Manchester teams up there, getting the best Managers, spending the highest transfer fees on the best players (in theory) and paying them the highest wages.

I know it is around 3 decades when both teams ruled the League, but it really isn't that long ago is it?

Where did it go wrong for Liverpool football? Will we ever catch up and go past the Manchester duo any time soon?

One word answer.

Heysel.

That's so long ago mate. It just seems that both teams will forever be in the shadows of the Manchester two.
