Hes not won a midfield battle in yonks. He won't ever be anything more than a dog with a bone type, and thats simply not good enough for a team with certain ambitions, you have to have more to your game

He isn't a bad passer of the ball, and he does win midfield battles, but seems very isolated in the midfield at times.

On a serious note, his passing is actually okay, in that he makes good choices of pass. He should be pushing himself to work on passing forwards however, this is something Martinez won't push him to do. He could learn a lot from Gibson in this sense
