New job, question about hours.

37.5 will not include a lunch break, so a 7.5 hr working day, plus 1 hr for lunchtime, so something like 8.30am to 5pm or 9am to 5.30pm in all. But whether you get an 1 hr lunchbreak in reality is a different matter!

Been offered a new job which pays pretty well and requires me to only work 37.5 hours a week.

In the contract it does not state whether this 37.5 hours a week includes a lunch break or not... in-fact it mentions nothing about lunch breaks.

Is it standard for lunch breaks to be included in the total hours ones need to work per week or is it more likely to not include them ?

Been self employed for most of my life so never really had to deal with this stuff before apart from in my last job where it was all spelled out for me in the contract so there could be no confusion.

It's not standard mate because it's not a contractual right rather employment law. If you work longer than 6 hours then you have to take at least a 20 minute break which is unpaid. We don't have it in our contract as we could be asked to work Mon-Fri 9-5 or 3 shifts, not including the actual hours gives a bit more flexibility.

On our flexi sheets your dinner doesn't count as hours worked, which is why most people take half an hour instead of an hour.
We are on 35 hour weeks though.

In factories it was always the case that on days you'd originally do 40 hours 7-30 to 4.30 , an hour being lunch & tea break.

whereas on shifts it was 6-2,2-10,10-6 so you'd get paid for your breaks.

When the working week was shortened (37.5) it just meant the hours on fridays altered, we even did away with a lunch break so we'd knock off at 1. shifts did same as well so 2-10 & nights changed giving a bit more of the weekend back.

I sometimes take over an hour for lunch. What a rebel.

I get paid overtime if I 'work' through my lunch.

Officially I've not had a lunch break in months...

It'll be 5 x 8 hour shifts, minus 30 mins a day for lunch...
