I have seen southall pull out saves that truely left me amazed. His shot stopping even in his later years was amazing , and he even ruined that Geordie weirdo from big brother's dream, of scoring at at james park in the legends match on sky. That was an outstanding save and he had been retired about 10 years and was 10 stone heavier

The thing is shot stopping isn't really why you spend big money on a keeper. Most players in the top couple of divisions will be very good shot stoppers. Especially with reflex saves. There are differences in quality, obviously, but not enough to account for the difference between and £2 million keeper and a £28 million one. Caballero yesterday made a great reflex save, but that doesn't mean he's a great keeper. The money comes for qualities like positioning, distribution, and decision making.

Shay Given always struck me as a great Match Of The Day shot stopper who also routinely played as part of defences with pretty poor records.

Defo this. Southall pulled off amazing saves, and plenty of WTF moments! He doesn't get the credit he deserves because not every game was on tv back then. But there is a reason everyone from the 80's rates him so highly.

That save from the geordie whopper was outstanding. Kevin Ratcliffe said that the save was so good, they didn't invite Southall back to those games anymore cos it went against what they were trying to do.

"Van Gaal only made the audacious move to replace Ajax keeper Cillessen – who has never saved a penalty in his senior career – in the dying seconds of extra-time, throwing on Krul after instructing the understudy to perform a length warm-up."

Who is the geordie whopper by the way?

Hahahahaha what the hell is this absolute guff, posted in the "Everton news" thread? Apparently, despite Joel contributing to more wins in the past 6 months than Howard has in 2 years, Joel isn't capable of winning us games but Howard is. Who is the complete testicle that wrote this?

Martyn at 38 was a better shot stopper and overall goalkeeper than Howard has ever been.

Even when the ball was at his feet he was calmer.

I still have a belly laugh every now and again at people who were coming on here saying that Howard was better than Martyn because Martyn apparently only had 1 good season with us. Then when pulled up on it, they said his player of the season award in 2003 didn't count because we finished 17th
