Roberto Martinez discussion

How is it when every other team in the top ten is also doing better? Putting aside the differences in squad (Bent v Lukaku...honestly). The simple fact is that points are largely irrelevant in a twenty horse race. It's like getting relegated on a higher points tally than a team who stayed up the previous season, no one cares, and no one would say it was a better performance than the team who survived. In 04/05 in the race for the line we finished ahead of 16 others, in 13/14 it was only 15. Like coming fourth in the olympics on a wind assisted day boasting that your time is better than the bronze medalist of a previous year. No one cares and there is still no medal. 4th is 4th, 5th is one worst. Martinez could poll 83 points, but if 4 teams ahead of him hit 90 then it's not as relatively good as the 61 in 04/05. Why is that so hard?
That's just daft. The Moyes 61 points and last CL spot season was an absolute freak season. In no way can that freak occurrence be used to suggest getting 72 points in the PL is worse than getting 61.

Completely unsustainable.

8 wins from 26 games.

Keep dressing that up as much as you want David, but its simply not good enough, it doesnt matter what we did 2 years ago, it doesnt matter what we did in 1985, it doesnt even matter what we do next season. This season we have won.

8 wins in 26 games = A win every 3.25 games

Last season we won

12 wins in 38 games = A win every 3.16 games

Quite grim reading.

Martinez isnt on trial for the season he got right, hes on trial for the SEASONS hes got wrong.

Statistically that is 31% win rate, which is his percentage for the premier league. He is living up-to his record.

I'd agree with @Saint Domingo on this. You can't really compare points won in any given seasons definitively, although I'd generally say that league position is more important than points gained. If Martinez wins the league next year with 71 points I would say that would be a better season than when he finished 5th with 72 points.

Leicester's season is a freak season according to you (you even asked to be vaulted if they beat us), Spurs are on a freak season also apparently, now our 04/05 was a freak season. Guess which one isn't though? That's right the 72 points under Martinez which was so sustainable he's got absolutely nowhere near it since (literally nowhere, not even remotely close). Has it occurred to you that maybe 13/14 was the freak season?

Pipe down. 8 losses in the 35 games we've played this season.

That's a loss less than every four games.

You're welcome.

"On trial" for getting to the SF of a cup and later stages of the other one and scoring 46 goals in the league and playing football touched by the Gods.

I bet he's bricking it wondering whether he's got a job here next season.

*roars with laughter*

To win you first have to not lose. We did that in 27 matches out of 35. It's all about fractions turning draws into wins.

But he didn't. That's why people were gutted when Lennon went off
Lennon was great in the first half but not as effective in the second half when they doubled up on him and stopped the supply, the odd thing was bringing Del on in the same position to have two players closing him down, thought he should have left Lennon on and altered the attacking strength on the left to give Pulis something to think about

He's not getting sacked, so the gnashing is for literally nothing.

This is a very young team, and in any sport a young team will be inconsistent while it learns. It will produce moments of brilliant flair but lacks tactical understanding. Every young athlete is like this.

I can't remember too many games that we've been second best in this season. Most of the games we've lost, we've outplayed our opponents and lost to moments of naivety or madness. Most of those indiscretions fall on Martinez's shoulders, but so too does the fact the team played well enough to be in a winning position in the first place.

This season has been so close to being a good one. The Bournemouth game remains my tipping point - we claim a last gasp win there, morale explodes and we kick on after an excellent few weeks. But from then on, the team has lacked belief and fortitude.

People are right when they say this team is close to something excellent. People are right when they say the manager is responsible for parts of the disappointment this season (and even moreso last season). Nobody is right in suggesting he is close to losing his job, that's just the reality of the club at present.

It's not easy some weeks, but all we can do is watch it unfold. He might bring the best out of some rising stars, tidy up the few lingering issues and see us really kick on. He might be brought completely undone by stubbornness and his tactical failings. Either way, the end game is some time away from now, rendering the debate largely pointless.

This is the crux of the matter. If you are playing in a certain way and it is not working because a player is having a mare then change him. If the system isn't working and the players are playing well then you need a substitute who will change the system and make the opposition change what they are doing.
Rarely does Plan A (2) work, sometimes you need a Plan B.
