Roberto Martinez discussion

The what??

He finished the piece by saying that Martinez teams just cannot defend.

Thats the defining bit for me.
They never have; no matter whether its here, Wigan or Swansea. They simply arent set up to defend and teams need to be able to defend and attack.

I personally thought he would adjust at Everton; a massive opportunity for him and one where hopefully he would grow as a manager and adapt. But I just dont see it and despite all the wonderful football, the attacking intent, we simply need to be able to defend better and I dont think he has it in his locker to sort it.

Yes we are a team/squad which is evolving, but, and this is key to it for me, were still making the same mistakes as two years ago. Our young kids need to play, we all agree on that, but they also need to be tactically naive, disciplined and learn from mistakes.

Spurs kids make mistakes once, they dont do it again. Ours make mistakes five or six times. They carry on doing it.

I dont see it happening. There is no fear factor and they I know for a fact the players operate in a safe environment where mistakes arent frowned upon as much as other teams. Yes it carries its advantages, but five or six times down the line, it becomes habit and routine.

I am also worried about his selection policy; aside from the pathetic treatment of both Howard and Robles, both in the time it took to drop Howard and the failure to give Joel his chance, I dont get how Osman can play in a semi final despite not being deemed good enough to play at all, all season, the lack of Aaron Lennon all season, the Kone stubborness and the total exclusion of Mirallas from first team duties except for 10 mins here and there.

I too question our fitness. If were not going to bother on set pieces, at least compensate for it by being an ultra fit team who hound the other team for 90 minutes. We seemingly do neither.

I get the feeling that should we win something, it will mostly be through good fortune, a one off brilliant performance rather than a concerted evolution of a team made up of experienced pro's and talented kids. We arent evolving , were treading water still, only this time in a slightly more fancy manner.

I really want him to succeed, hes a lovely guy, clearly talented but he has glaring weaknesses which I dont think he is prepared to correct. Players know it, fans know it and the opposition knows it. Hes like Rodgers; limited and not really going anywhere.

Same squad but with the addition of Lukaku, Kone, McCarthy, Barry, Del.
Yes Moyes got to improve this much at once didn't he.

Martinez got the improvements in 1 summer that other managers took years to get. It's backfired big time on him though because most of the money spent since has been to stand still whilst others have moved forward.

He's a fraud and has conned many. He knew if he got off to a flyer in the first season it would give him a free ride for the rest of his time here.

He got to improve that much on two occasions.

A) Summer 2005
B) Summer 2009 in terms of selling a player to get replacements in

It didn't work out then but i'm not slating Moyes as he was great for us.

And no it has not 'backfired' big-time on RM. We still have not spent anywhere near as much as a lot of other teams.

I'm not letting him live off that third season. IMO the positives we are seeing this season outway the negatives.

We all accept home form must be better but he is changing the entire image of the club into one of the best attacking teams in the country - would you have preferred to stick with moyes to have stayed finished 7th with some of the rubbishy we seen or take a risk and see Lakaku, Geri, Barkely realise their potential. Not defending the home record but it's fine margins here - 6 more points and this forum would have a very different tone.

A) Yep, agree, we're a dream for the neutral - yet it's ultimately worthless when coupled with a bottom half finish and a mass of goals against.

B) Fine Margins = yep, agree again, but I don't want ANY margins ideally, fine or otherwise, but these 'margins' that cost us so dearly could be wiped out completely if there was a simple shred of defensive guile from him and the same pattern didn't repeat and repeat and repeat...

Don't want to come across as if I'm having a go at you but this change of image or style people bang on about I just don't see it. All I see is a team that can't defend and is easy to beat. If this is the new style people are banging on about then yes bring back Moyes if that was the only option but I don't want to see him here again ever. Having to rely on scoring 3-4 goals to win a game reminds of Keegan and look how he turned out.

Some say he changed the fortunes of Swansea which is why they are doing so well, but the same must apply to Wigan which he absolutely destroyed.

He is a lower league manager at best to me. His record backs this up.

Yes. He is a clown but a very clever clown at the end of the day.
Let's be fair - the concept of him doing a good job in his first season and then purposefully letting things slip is something I find hard to believe.

No one would do that. It's in his interest to do well, not do worse. Better league placing, aim for CL, get pay rise etc. Why do badly on purpose?

"Joey Barton said..."

Ha Ha Ha.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel now.

"Joey Barton said..."

Ha Ha Ha.

That 'kin slays me that.

Er what? A pro footballer giving a professional opinion.

Used to think you were funny Dave but you must either actually be Bobby himself or his wife to show this sort of loyalty.
