Martinez needs to realise that the ends don't justify the means with Kone. Yes, he enables Lukaku, but all that does is help justify the big fee paid to Chelsea, rather than improve the overall performance of the team. It must be brilliant for teams to come to Goodison and not have to worry one bit about defending their right side.
He could also do with adjusting his tactics to suit the players he has. This is definitely a group of players that thrive on the counter, and yet he remains obsessed with possession.
RM likes to play with one wideman tucking in and for that role Cleverley is boss as he was at Stoke.
That was a game crying out for two wingers to strech WBA's deep defence. But we only had one at anyone time.

However yesterday we needed to change tactics at half-time. Two wideman to attack their fullbacks and get to the by-line. In previous years we never had two good wingers but yesterday we had Lennon playing out of his skin and Del Boy who has played on the left in Spain.
Another opportunity to progress was missed. WBA are a bog standard team with standard 2 bus tactics who should be put to the sword by the talent available to RM.
I could be wrong but I'm sure there right back was a center half out of position? Did we try and target him with a winger going at him? Nope, in fact i don't even know what tactics we did have, whatever they were after 30 minutes it wasn't working and he didn't even try and change anything, so many bodies in midfield who can all do the same thing, and what we did need was stuck on the bench, just pathetic.
You're missing the point of having 4 CBs.
Pulis doesn't care how many times the first one is beaten by a winger, he knows he has 3 CBs (the opposite full back and the two conventional CBs) condensed together to defend whatever ball comes in.
Aaron Lennon beat Chester every time, but everything he put into the Box was either poor or was beaten away by Dawson, Ollson and Evans.
That's why Kone came on, to act as a second forward.
Do we need better than Kone? Absolutely. Do we have another striker? Nope.
Was Kone the only option? Yes. Imo.

Bullcrap.
Kevin Mirallas on 1 leg will ALWAYS, ALWAYS be a better option than Arouna Kone.
Saying Kone was the only option is short sighted at best, hes signed an utter effort of a footballer, gave him number 9 and compounds his mistake every single week by allowing to step foot on a football pitch.
Nah.
If Kone is the only option, that would suggest some hopelessly unbalanced squad building
Let's get some more midfielders in that we don't really know where to play! Whoo!
Kone is a better option than Mirallas?
Nah come on, no one can genuinely think this.
I don't think of Kev as a striker. I think Kev is the better player, undoubtedly.
KM though is someone who is brilliant one on one, out wide cutting in. When he does that he can either shoot or look for the only player in amongst a sea of Red and Blue - Lukaku.
Back to goal? KM? No one can actually want to see that?
Were Chelsea every man behind the ball, playing 4 CBs at the time?Certainly not Chelsea, where he received the ball with his back to the goal, spun round and finished it....
If Martinez had of put Mirallas on instead of Kone, would you have been critical of him?I don't think of Kev as a striker. I think Kev is the better player, undoubtedly.

Totally different situation and you know it.
