Context is everything really..... I broke up with my missus around the time of Beck's last album, to me that album is pure sadness because it fires off little nostalgic pangs and the likes, whilst 'straight to you' by Nick is associated with really good memories for me, even the Daniel Johnson song only really became 'sad' after I watched the film about him. I actually find 'Dancing Queen' very sad, there is an emptiness and loneliness about the thing, some strange melancholia

I liked that Mad world one, which was originally a Tears for fears song from 1980's especially as it beat the X Factor single to no1 that Christmas.

The Final Cut by Pink Floyd, from the album of the same name.

You genuinely have to be ready to listen to this one, as it's so powerful - a man contemplating suicide.

Listened to on headphones magnifies the impact too, as the song is laden with hidden whispers that you can only hear through headphones - " do it, go on do it " being one of the whispers.

It's a masterpiece of writing, but leaves a terrible hollow feeling after listening to it.

Couldn't agree more Donald. It's a fantastic album from start to finish, but it's got to be amongst the gloomiest albums of all time. I think a lot of people can't handle it for that reason.
