He's a good option off the bench to be fair

Think the severity of Besic's injury and McCarthy's fitness not being reliable either made it necessary for Gibson to stay.

He'd be the answer to many of the problems. A Finn first of all (ok, Russian parents...) who was selected the best player of the Russian league last season. Deep lying playmaker, tougher and better version of Gibson. The only good player in our national team.
