Roberto Martinez discussion

Martinez inherited Moyes' squad, but what did the performance owe to Moyes?

Distin and Jagielka remained as centre backs, while Fellaini followed Moyes. Martinez asked the defence to play the ball forward through Baines and, in particular, Coleman. Martinez brought in Barry and McCarthy as defensive midfielders to provide cover when the fullbacks attacked.

Barkley shared one of the two midfield places with Osman and Pienaar. In attack, Martinez brought in Lukaku to play with Mirallas. Stones and Deulofeu appeared too.

It was a new-look Everton. There were four new faces in the first team (plus Deulofeu and Stones), and a new style of play.

That's all very true mate.

So what's your thoughts on why we've been conceding more goals in the last season and a half than we did in Martinez' first season ?

Top three reasons ? Genuine question like

Only one needed.

The team dont defend. As a unit.

Simple to cure, and he has done it before. Just needs to be given a slap.

Been a bit unlucky as well, got to be said.

Is right. However, his record in last season and this season has been quite simply unacceptable in my opinion. Yes, the Europa league played a part last season but this season has just added to the damning statistics. I'm fed up with the same wham that comes from his mouth too. What Merson said on Soccer Saturday is true. Not a fan of that smug meff but what he said was very accurate.

I veer, I must admit.

In essence, the 3 key things any manager has be decent at are attacking, defending, and signings. Most managers get no where near all 3.

IMO the hardest of those are attacking and signings. He has proved pretty damned good at those.

But he must improve the 3rd. Simply must. Because I would take a little less attacking with some more steel.

None of that changes the fact that the 2013/14 season was an anomaly, inasmuch that Martinez didn't oversee an awful defensive performance like he has done in every other season of his premiership career. There is a clear trend of awful defending with Martinez, and only a single one-off anomaly that goes against that trend, and it was the first season in which he took over a David Moyes squad.

Agreed. Signings wise, most of the times, Roberto has come up with gems. I'll never forget that night in September when he sold Fellaini and brought in three (arguably) integral parts of the team. Attacking wise, especially in season one were incredible. What happened to that Everton like. I think the last proper boss Everton performance in the league was Against Arsenal at Goodison In April 2014 when they played them off the park that day.

Indeed. Defensive wise, it's far to easy. Sometimes I think Everton win games because the other team are having a mare in front of goal or just don't turn up and we do. And on the days teams turn up, the team stinks the place out like. I'd happily take 1-0, 2-0 wins day in day out, not arsed if it's boring. If it wins games, so be it.

This season is a great puzzle and a great disappointment to me!

We've had an unsettled defence, and without Baines and Coleman, the fullbacks have played a more conventional role. I would have expected this to support the defence at the expense of the attack. Galloway and Mori have proved more than adequate replacements, but we've carried on scoring and leaking goals. Now Baines has returned, he has resumed his attacking role, which I think leaves us still more open at the back. And Coleman is ready to return too.

Our interplay going forwards has been good, and at times sensational. Barry is another year older, but has been playing better and more constructively than ever. Most of the play goes through him now. Deulofeu and Lukaku have struck up a good understanding, and Lukaku has rediscovered his first touch and is prepared to use his strength.

But defenders have been left one on one with attackers. Too often, they have missed their tackles and, without cover, the forwards have scored. The return of McCarthy should help provide defensive cover. But there have been a lot of individual errors. Injuries, the run of the ball and poor decisions have knocked us back, and perhaps all these incidents have knocked our confidence too.

I think that Roberto is attempting to do a very hard thing - to play the ball through massed defences of talented and physically strong players. We have been able to create chances and score goals, but perhaps our efforts have been too great. Whatever style of football you prefer, you should not become predictable. So I think Roberto should employ different styles from time to time, if only to keep the opponents guessing.

As you can see, I am rather groping in the dark. I think our play is generally good, but the results are clearly not. But football is neither logical nor predictable. Cause and effect are difficult to determine. I think that we have experienced some extreme events, and I hope that in the near future our games will regress to the mean. In other words, I can only suggest that we have been going through a bad patch.

I do not see us as a terminal case at all. In many ways, I think Roberto is doing the right things and, for the time being, I am happy to put my trust in him. But as the problems at Chelsea confirm, once things have slipped too far - for whatever reason - the position is very hard to recover.
