Roberto Martinez discussion

Like I said I do think Barry was a good player and he still is. But not in the same class as those mentioned. Pains me to say it, they are great English players of the premiership era.

Interesting debate. Like you, if I was asked to name my top 10 English PL players, doubt he would be in it. In fact, he wouldnt.

But he is the only one in the top 10 all time appearances to be still playing in the league. And starting. And playing well to boot.

That must be worth a plaudit.

Can anyone explain how the person who promised blue bill (and us) champions league can say the team is not under performing while sitting in 12th place? No disrespect to bill but bobby might not have long to fulfill that promise

He never said when he would achieve it like

Prob set himself a 100 year time limit

Ignore everything else and lets say for example we are taken over and have loads of cash to spend and Martinez has the full confidence of the new owners.

If in the summer he was able to shift out whatever players he wanted and keep all the players he wanted to + sign his 1st choice targets (within reason) who fit his style of play....and lets say they are all in the bracket he spends money on (under 25 with huge potential...

Do you not think with one season playing together nexf year and getting to know each other as a team (bar ref decisions and loads of key injuries) he would have us hitting close to top 4 with his team and the following season with the extra experience and development for the young players he would get us top 4?

Because i firmly believe if he is able to build his squad then we will achieve top 4...its no use giving someone with a massively different approach to other managers and then not having long term patience to let him build a squad....

Whats the worst that can happen, were mid-table and have a load of potential superstars ready for another manager to utlize?

The positives of patience for me far outweigh te negatives....

We dont know what happens behind the scenes but if you subscribe to the gradual inprovement of the squad then in the summer we will have a new keeper and a star left winger + more decent additions....even with the disasters this year we would be several positions higher just with a couple of better players than kone and howard.
The way things are going another manager will be utilizing their potential

Not sure if mentioned already but the arse that is Paul merson said something pretty spot on today in his paper column. Stating the obvious as well.

To paraphrase it, we have England's left back, Ireland's right back, a defender worth 50 million if the speculation is true and jagielka who is one of the most experienced around. We also have two holding midfielders in front of them including Gareth Barry who last week covered more ground than anyone else in the league

Its not good enough that we are shipping goals the way we are and its down to the manager.

He also said about stones, the issue is the manager is teaching him bad habits rather than teaching him how to develop as a defender.

And what's happened since 2013/14? Martinez' stats have started to resemble the years of management he showed at Wigan. The stat you refer to above is an anomaly in an otherwise awful defensive record. I don't think it is a coincidence that this anomaly took place just after Moyes left.

Martinez inherited Moyes' squad, but what did the performance owe to Moyes?

Distin and Jagielka remained as centre backs, while Fellaini followed Moyes. Martinez asked the defence to play the ball forward through Baines and, in particular, Coleman. Martinez brought in Barry and McCarthy as defensive midfielders to provide cover when the fullbacks attacked.

Barkley shared one of the two midfield places with Osman and Pienaar. In attack, Martinez brought in Lukaku to play with Mirallas. Stones and Deulofeu appeared too.

It was a new-look Everton. There were four new faces in the first team (plus Deulofeu and Stones), and a new style of play.

Well if football is not your professional area of expertise, why are you so adamant that Martinez is the wrong man for the job? You'll say the results, but then you've just admitted, you're not an expert... This is my point mate, that even reasonable posters like yourself who are just as entitled to your opinion as I am mine, are unable to think of anyone who could come in right now at this very moment and guarantee success...

hey, maybe it's not just the manager, maybe it's the players as well?
At this point in time its safety I am more interested in. And don't tell me we will not get dragged into a relegation battle because all the evidence says we will.

To he honest I have a gut feeling. The main defenders of Martinez can trace their support back to moyes. Here is my thinking.

Either

1. You see the players Martinez is signing and compare it to previous. You like the signings and see how much better they are and want to stick to that. Many of you believe that Martinez once he finally signs his players for his team they will all come together and turn into some mighty force in the league.

2. Because we had moyes for so long it has made a lot of people believe Martinez then needs time in the job. This is evident to the excuses or explanations for everything to do with him, from leaking goals to bad luck. If moyes had only been here half the time would you be so forgiving of our current manager?

Probably sounds like I'm generalizing and lets be honest, none of us are right or wrong until he wins something or leaves the club but personally I think if you put this team and this manager anywhere else in the league from city to stoke or whatever, the flaws in his management would be so much more scrutinised by the fans.

Or it might be a sign that he is past it and shouldn't be playing every single game for a side with top 6 aspirations. Wouldn't get a regular game for any side in the top 6

I am a Martinez supporter, mainly cos he is our manager, but you make valid points.

The reason I still (just) am is simple. And I have said it before. And is is also why he frustrates the hell out of me.

He has proved he can do the hardest part of football right. Scoring, attacking, flair.

He has also proved, all be it not as well, that he can sort stuff out. Think back to last winter. He tightened up, we drew/won some pretty drab games, and the ship was righted. Sort of.

It is a billion times more difficult to fix a teams scoring problems than it is their defensive issues. And it would mean less of the first and more of the second. He has done it once. Someone needs to remind him of that. Not a major issue. Or it shouldnt be anyrate.

Transfers? Good/great on balance.

THe cureent top 6 or the 'traditional' top 6? He'd probably be a starter for West Ham, Leicester and possibly a regular for Utd with van Gaal as manager.
