Hypothetical - who would you replace Martinez with ?

People's belief in Martinez being the right man is based on us having an exciting squad of players.

If we're basing it on results then there's not much to back that up.
Not just the good squad but being able to see those players generally improve and being able to watch some lovely football.

As for results, we got 5th in his initial season, went the furthest of any English team in Europa last season at his first attempt and are in a cup semifinal this year. There are obvious weak points but there are some positives as well.

I don't know how you say that. Record PL points haul first season with 21 wins disputes that; now we stand on the cusp of a cup final this season. Resists are there for all to see. He wouldn't have a job if he wasn't get them.

First season absolutely fantastic, some of my best memories as an Evertonian.

The last 18 months badly underachieved.

Cup run has been a welcome bonus but I base the quality of a manager on their performance on the league. If we go out against City then so be it, I won't slate him for it. It's a one off game often settled by the luck of the day.

The league demonstrates consistency and the true level that the squad is performing at.

If Martinez had overseen Liverpool put 6 past his team at Goodison you'd be marching down with a pitchfork!

He has won 2 back to back games (West Brom and Watford) but lost 3 on the bounce before that when including the FA cup game (Crystal Palace, Norwich and West Ham).

I like Koeman, that 4-0 victory over Arsenal was sweet, but not sure it quite calls for the bunting when they are 1 point above us. Your point about him being able to deal with a lot of players sold out from under him is valid but tbh would prefer it we didn't have to deal with that situation happening anyway - prefer a manager who tries to keep the squad together and convinces his board accordingly.

All relative they have lost more than us but are above us with worse players, they have also lost half their team in the past 2 seasons due to an owner who isn't bothered yet he's still got them up there. He's a more complete manager than Martinez no question about it.

If Martinez had the guts to drop Howard and tweak his tactics then I could see us being okay under the current manager, but we have said this for the past 18 months now.

Yeah, to what end though? Outside of the top four there's nothing to be had.

I've never seen the fascination with finishing top 6 or whatever. It's nowhere. The cups are tangible success.

who would you have then ?

There's no one I'm overly sold on that I think can turn us into champions or whatever else, but the point I'm making is that the likes of Hughes, and Koeman wouldn't take us backwards from where we are now.

It's not like when Moyes left and plenty said we'd struggle to find a manager who can maintain the level we were at then.

We'll have to disagree mate, from what seen in this league think Koeman is significantly weaker at both developing players and persuading them to stay/join. He also hasn't showed any particular prowess in the cup competitions which are realistically the only chance of silverware for a club with our finances.

He's not a poor manager by any stretch - he seems a pleasant man, enjoy quite a lot of the football they play, delighted by the fact he can't stand LVG but given their respective experience think Martinez is the better coach.
