Roberto Martinez discussion

Great attacking football means nothing if you can't also defend

As exciting as we are to watch, as Evertonians we should want the club to win games. We're miles away from being a force in the game because of our poor defending, and I'm afraid that's down to Martinez. We have good defenders. Not amazing ones but ones who are capable of not conceding so many goals. I'm sorry, but it's the tactics at fault here and Martinez seems unwilling to change them

I'd happily sacrifice some attacking excitement in exchange for defensive stability

If Lukaku gets injured, we're going to be in a lot of danger. He's keeping us even remotely close to competitive at the moment. Without him, I shudder to think what would happen

Attacking football without being able to defend is no more a feat than Pulis having every man back behind the ball then praising a solid defence. If you can't balance both aspects then you are not a top manager. At the moment Martinez is just at the opposite extreme of managerial incompetency as Pulis.

The point is it lacks credibility. I dont doubt you or D410 for that matter, I doubt the source. How can anyone expect to believe this garbage when it cant even be attributed? If i were to say to you that I was told that the board are going to offer Martinez a contract extension after the Spurs game would you believe what I was told? No. And with good reason. There has to be credibility.

Just the usual Everton Village rumour and counter rumour mill. Been here and seen it many times before and the vast majority is bunkum.

BTW: a director questioning the game management skills of Roberto?! Who on earth could believe that? Which one has piped up and asked such a question? Maybe you could inform us or hazard a guess and see if we believe the scenario?

As I've already said, I was responding to another poster and haven't posted anything for people to "believe it". I don't care whether you feel it lacks credibility, I don't.

This source tells me things will happen and these things happen, in that order. Unless you know my source, how can you possibly comment with any meaningful way about doubting?

Again as I've already said, it isn't exactly the most exciting "rumour" to be circulating is it?

Perfectly put

I think most teams would be capable of scoring lots of goals on their way to famous draws and defeats if they simply abandoned all defensive duties, which is why I'll happily wave off Ian Hola-way when it's time for him to take the reins at Sporting Gijon.

That's exactly what we have an upmarket Ian Holaway turning Everton into an upmarket Wigan.

I'll just pop this here. Makes you look a bit foolish.

:coffee:

A genius who simplified the game. Put a top goalkeeper in place. In front of that put a balanced centreback partnership flanked by two full backs who primarily defend. Base your midfield on two central players who have an incisive passing range, good mobility and are good for a few goals. Two widemen good in attack and defence who can get good service into the box and also chip in. Two strikers upfront who will hit more than 20 goals each a season. It really couldn't be any simpler than this. A balanced side with a strong defence with goals all over the team will have you in the top 4 easily.

This is why it is sometimes ridiculous seeing our side with a midfield who don't score, full backs who can't defend, an amateur keeper, strikers played on the wing, one main source of goals, yet it is hailed by some as a reinvention of modern football and an education to the masses. Bizarre.

The top 4 sides as it stands have scored an identical amount of goals to us, however their defense is almost 10 goals tighter than ours. That is the problem that needs addressing and has done for the last 18 months

...so we're halfway there then? Just need to sort that GK out and that's that.

It's important to note mate, anything that can be construed as being a slant against Martinez is instantly dismissed, at times almost ironically....for example someone posted an article from the Guardian questioning Martinez....it was instantly dismissed by Dave....yet a few days earlier he was talking about national radio stations referring to us as 'The Entertainers' so that was either 5Live or Talksport...or another way of looking at it Savage, Fletcher it Chapman from the BEEB or someone like Durham, Gough or Brazil from talksport.

In other words ignore him when he dismisses you and stick to your guns....as of all the Agenda talk his is the most Evident, at least ours is based on Everton getting best results possible, not Martinez bragging about being the top scorers from open play.

No, I'm looking for balance. By all means list both elements....[/QUOTE

If you was like me for instance, wanted Martinez in the first place, but can see he looks massively flawed and are now thinking he might not be the right man for the job, I could see that as balanced.

You on the other hand will not even question him not being the right man, thus making you completely the opposite

Hold on though, a source tells you the very dramatic news that 'a director' has had 'a word' with Martinez about his game management...and you dont think to ask which one of these men has interfered in the football side of the club?

I'm sorry, I find it hard to believe.

I think the name of this 'director' is absent from the proceedings because anyone viewing it will burst out laughing trying to picture a scene where it happens.

I mean, come on mate FFS...one of these idiots standing there telling a PL coach who's won a trophy and taken Everton to their best ever PL points total standing in front of him telling him where he's going wrong and what they'd do in the same circumstances?

Pfffft!
