Roberto Martinez discussion

We have alot of young players in the squad and a new defensive partnership. I agree with you that on paper we should be doing better but football isnt played on paper and young footballers wil make mistakes. Martinez has the challenge to find the right blend but in my opinion i would rather be trying to tweak this style than previous styles. Can he do it? I don't know but we should give him longer than two and a half seasons.
How long for you then mate? Also what has he changed to go from his winning football of 13/14 to his pretty football without winning in past 18 months in your opinion.

Not just a leader in defence a leader in the team someone who can get a hold of them.
He was on the pitch yesterday,Shawcross, just what we need IMHO,"if" we were to change how we play at the back,a problem we have at the back trying to play our way out of trouble is that only Stones is comfortable doing it(and he had the proverbial nightmare yesterday)everyone else we have barring possibly Baines look like rabbits caught in headlights being asked to play this way,its almost as if they will be fined if they punt a clearance into the stands!Shawcross would struggle coming here the way we play too,Martinez has got to sort this out and become more "old school" at the back.

It's scandalous that our best team in 20 odd years is languishing in mid table, in the most open premier league season yet. When teams like Tottenham are capitalising, with a squad id argue is very close, if not slightly poorer than ours. feel Bobby has to go.

4 points of the European spots is hardly languishing in mid table.

It's not ideal but it isn't critical yet

If we go back to playing the style we did under moyes, i will walk out of goodison and never go back.

Mate I said something similar after the semi final defeat to Liverpool. But I've been watching us for too long not to want to go, warts and all. And my lad wouldn't let me not go.

Is it really unlucky though? I mean, it's not exactly unlikely that a 33 year old muck and nettles centre half who throws himself all over the place might pick up the odd injury is it? And yet the manager knowingly went in to the season without experienced back up. That was his choice, I thought it was a bad one at the time and I still do.
Suarez almost helped Rodgers look like a league title winning manager, Lukaku is helping Martinez look a mid table manager, he goes now through injury or at the end of the season (which he will) then God help us.

Can't you make the connection between it being such an open season, you praising Spurs for doing well, and us only being 9 points behind them in when they lay in 3rd?

I know mate, i used to say it most weeks when we had moyes but was still sat there the season after. People just ignored me in the end.

Spurs have a better squad than ours

Do Leicester, West Ham, Palace, Stoke? I don't even buy Spurs tbh. They have an excellent keeper defender and striker. Aside from that I don't see any real quality anywhere. How are Dier Alli Bentaleb Mason better than Barkley McCarthy Cleverley Besic? Lamela Dembele better than Deulofeu and Mirallas, Trippier Rose Walker better than Baines and Coleman? Not in my book. They have a good squad the same as we do but an excellent manager. It's lazy this never ending 'we can't hops to compete with Spurs or Liverpool'. We have finished ahead of both multiple times in our recent history.

I've lost faith in his ability to turn this around.

He can't half spot a player and get us playing great attacking football. Plus his ability to improve young players and attract higher calibre players has been great.

However he's shown nothing in his career as a manager to suggest he can turn around our defensive woes. I fear his first season was merely him reaping the rewards of Moyes' defence but improving our attack. But now we've become Wigan with better players.

We finally have a world class striker and we've gone from being a top 7 team to a mid table one. It's so frustrating and I just think that talking about the future is great and all, but if we don't seize the opportunity of the present then we'll be waving goodbye to the likes of Lukaku.
I'm a big Martinez fan on the basis that it's refreshing to be able to go to every game and know we'll create enough chances to win, a pleasure that was sadly lacking in Moyes tenure ( and for so long under every other manager since Howard in the mid 80's), but I have to say that's a well written post. I do t agree with the Martinez Out stuff but there's no frustration reading well presented posts on the matter as opposed to the usual negative diatribe.

Because you've got your blue tinted specs on, simply put their squad has more depth of quality. And only really our front 3 woul get near their starting 11 but even then they've already got their own 30 a year striker and a boss creative player behind him. Maybe Coleman an baines in form get in aswell.

And the most important thing is they have a quality keeper, if we had one of them we'd be much closer to them in the league
