Roberto Martinez discussion

The thing is Howard has been underperformd for ages but the manager decided not to bring replacement last summer nor play Robles (another gamble) speaks volume for himself. He rates Howard highly.

I don't think he rates Howard highly, he's just still building his squad and I expect Howard to be the next to go. There's nothing to be gained by hanging him out to dry although he should of played Robles by now.

I can only assume that he believed what little money was available in the summer was better spent on a 3rd choice centre which was probably right as we've suffered long term injuries to our 1st and 4th choice centre halves a since.

Would I sack Martinez now? No.

I can't see his long term successor being availale. Whilst I don't rule out a quick fire replacement producing better results and thus a better league position, I don't think it is worth trampling on the clubs reputation of giving managers time just for an extra couple of places in the league, that will still amount to nothing overall. The Everton job is desirable and I think the reason for that is the decent amount of time managers are given.

However, last Christmas I said I would give him a year. Whilst I don't doubt his attacking credentials I think this is the worse everton defence I have seen. I am 28. During his 2 and a half years the defence has gotten worse not better. When I look at Martinez's record from 2009 onwards there is nothing that convinces me that he is capable of turning the defence around.

I get absolutely no pleasure in making this judgement on Martinez's defensive weakness. To the contrary of what Other forum posters say, I really want him to turn it around. MOTD must love us with all the goals we are scoring and opposition fans are always complimentary of our attacking strengths. As a season ticket holder I am seeing encouraging performances but crap results. Crap results that go back to september 2014. Crap results because of an inability to do the basics.

If we were to finish the season in our current position I would want him sacked. In the modern game, you are fortunate to be given a season to turn things around if things go sour. In 2013/14 we finished above Spurs. Would he still be manager now at Spurs and if not when would he have gone? I think Levy would have pulled the trigger last Christmas. They are a top 4 rival, or should be.

By May 2016 he would have been given a generous amount of time to turn it around and show everyone that he knows how to defend. I really hope that between now and the end of the season things improve but if they don't, he should go. I also think new ownership makes this more likely.

We're so good when we attack, but we're so poor in defence and I'm afraid the buck has to stop with Martinez. We have very capable defenders, so it's not just down to personnel

Martinez has a terrible blind spot when it comes to defending and he doesn't seem prepared to get another coach in to help him with it

If Lukaku turned round tomorrow and asked to leave, I honestly couldn't blame him

He's having the season of his life and is in very real danger of ending up with nothing at the end of it due to defensive frailties that he has no control over
i wouldn't argue over the book stopping with RM
We were up in arms over defending crosses and corners, there has been work done and against Newcastle we coped well.
We now need to concentrate on cutting the individual errors which seem to haunt us, I hate to single Stones out but yesterday he played numerous poor forward balls that put us on the back foot, their second goal being the main example.
I buy into the footballing philosophy from RM, but we need to get players who are defenders to defend and play football at the right opportunities.
As for Howard everybody in the ground can see he is not fit for purpose, this stubbornness by RM could be his undoing

I have said in other threads I would go and sign Vidic, he would sort things out on the pitch and also on the training field
Make no bones we need defensive know how and experience

I don't know there might be some freebie keepers around last summer who might do better than him. You know Tim is so so underperformed that I think Robles should get a chance bearing in mind I don't rate Robles at all as a keeper.

He would be a leader and organiser and that is what we desperately need.

What I would do, at least as a temporary measure...when Jagielka is fit, sacrifice the Kone/Mirallas/Lennon position, play all three of Jags, Mori and Stones but use Jags as an old fashioned sweeper. The attack would still be quite lethal, with lots of options. and the defence should be a lot less generous.

It is Kone then. Mirallas or Lennon barely involve.

All around me in GT6 we were saying make a sub and protect this defence at 3-2. May not have prevented the goals but would have least given me some re-assurance that he recognises a problem and pro-actively attempts to deal with it.

Too many of our games descend into basketball matches in the last 20 with a complete disconnect between attack and defence. Against norwich when jerome blasted the ball over the bar the camera behind the goal revealed 4 everton players at or around the halfway line - they obviously think/are coached to believe that protecting our goal is nothing to do with them.

Am fearing a proper education at the hands of spurs on sunday - fitter, more compact, better organised and perform both functions as a team

I don't think there is any doubt that when these new owners come in, Martinez will be gone.

The only thing that will save him is if he wins the League Cup.

The thought of Man City having 180 minutes of breaking us down is terrifying.

I have posted yesterday several views from Wigan fans on Martinez in this thread, go read them, the parallels to what happened there and now here are frightening.

Do not expect us to defend better any time soon, he took over from Bruce at Wigan when he had the 7th best defence in the league, within 3 and half months under Martinez they shipped more goals than the entire season under Bruce previously.

I can't put up with the way we leak goals anymore, I can't put up with Howard in net either, Martinez will not drop him, and he will not improve us defensively any time soon, it's not in his nature, he places little value on defending, he's nuts.

Best squad we have had in 25 years and Martinez is going to waste it and force our top players to look for other places to play their football.

The squad quality at this club is top 4 all day long, we have the best striker in the league, 2nd best goals scored record and the worst defence, nobody has shipped more goals at home then us.

If we score 2 goals lately there is always a very good chance we will concede 3, against decent teams they know how to get up rattled. Howard has got to be dropped for starters but i think that Martinez's stubbornness will not see him do that as if he does he then will be admitting that we have defensive problem.

So you know the new owners and you know what their plans are
