Halfway point of the season

Halfway into the season and I see one of the most attacking and exciting teams in the Pl and probably our most gifted attack wise since the glory days under Kendall.

There's a problem with the GK and this is down to Martinez. he should have promoted Robles as soon as he played well in the opening games of the LC run.

He needs to act on this and the second half of the season can be more fruitful than this first one.

However, I'm ok for now with where we are. Not great but it's easily remedied when you have a team capable of scoring 35 goals in 19 games.
You can look at it any way you wish.
We finished 11th last season with europe and we are 11th now without europe ,we are stagnating.
Coupled with the fact he can't sort the problem of us leaking goals for fun and picking kone all the time for some reason.
He is out of his depth

issue with this isn't what's good but what's bad.

I'm happy to develop a young team and give them leeway but when our good attack is being offset by terrible defending then it's all for nothing.

and why the hell would these players want to stay? why would lukaku want to play for a team where he can score every week and bang them in but knows the team will let in at the other end? or better yet he has to score because the team has conceded first again?

A lot of young players will stick by a manager if they are playing together. But I wouldn't blame the transfer requests if the team is still being managed the way it is, it's getting a bit of a joke now

Maybe this thread could be used for any thoughts people have on performance and expectations (what's gone on/how we've performed in the first half of the season and how it matches/surpasses/falls short of their expectations) and what can be expected in the second half of the season?

I'll kick it off in terms of a look at where we've been before at previous season halfway points (last decade) and where we eventually ended up.

Halfway position and points (and in brackets end of season position and points):

2015/16 10th 26pts (................)
2014/15 12th 21pts (11th 47pts)
2013/14 4th 37pts (5th 72pts) EL Qualification
2012/13 6th 33pts (6th 63pts)
2011/12 11th 24pts (7th 56pts)
2010/11 11th 22pts (7th 54pts)
2009/10 11th 22pts (8th 61pts)
2008/09 6th 29pts (5th 63pts) EL Qualification
2007/08 6th 33pts (5th 65pts) EL Qualification
2006/07 8th 27pts (6th 58pts) EL Qualification

This season so far fits in pretty much with the average of the decade at halfway mark in terms of position and points at the turn.

We're obviously playing great attacking football and Keystone Cops defensive football. It'd be nice to think January would bring movement. We need a decent second striker to slot in when the inevitable Lukaku injury comes along and a GK of any note to take over from Howard - although the latter looks unrealistic.

I'm standing by my 60+ point finish and good cup runs as the benchmark of a good season. We'll get them and it'll be a very decent marker down by a developing young team.

Bar charts look refreshing...

I agree with @davek. The team's not far away from being something really special. We're too far in to it to knock it on the head and start from scratch.

We've already achieved something special by being in the bottom half with Lukaku firing like he is.

I just don't get where people's faith/optimism is coming from. We haven't beaten a team in the top 10 all season and our defence is a shambles. Yes we've got good players but I've seen very little evidence of Martinez knowing what to do with them.

I get it. We're throwing points away left, right and centre. It's frustrating as hell and it needs fixing.

The criticism of Martinez is deserved, especially his bumming of Howard, but what about the highly entertaining football he's bought to the table, Or would you prefer the turgid gash that Moyes was dishing up?

Apart from the utd game, I think the team has played well and mostly been unlucky this season. Surely you can see that the team is not a million miles away from being really great and there's only a few things that need fixing?

Honestly mate, I think a lot of people would agree when I say I want to win, regardless of whether it's like Barcelona or The Dogs of War.

I love watching us play. Just a shame we are letting in so many goals.

Jags coming back in and a decent keeper in goals will definitely mean fewer goals conceded which will in turn mean draws and loses turning into wins.

We are missing Jags, McCarthy (at his best), need a better keeper (better than Robles too), and Stones needs a timeout (he has to improve his defending).

Agree 100%.

But, if Rom gets injured we are in all sorts though as a flip side.

With the money he's spent on:
Robles
McGeady
Kone
Alcaraz
Lennon

He could have signed a better keeper BUT he's had to sign some of these window to window as stop gaps.

What he needs to do now is start generating a transfer budget by selling players.
