Halfway point of the season

The manager chose to spend money elsewhere on players that he's really not got the most out of this season ie Lennon, Besic before that. He should have prioritised a keeper over that ridiculous flirtation with Yarmolenko.. 15 mill ready for a player with no intention of moving but no thought of changing the keeper? Crazy. Howard has been at a poor level since Moyes' last season. Hoping he would magically return to his peak was naive.

I don't disagree that this team is good going forward but the facts do not lie. We've plundered a few teams heavily but in 11 of the 19 games we've not scored more than one which is why we've drawn and lost a lot which is why we're mid table now. We have periods of looking sublime going forward but also long periods of looking as though we won't trouble the goalkeeper like Watford first half, Liverpool second half, Spurs away, Norwich second half, most of the Leicester game, first half WBA game City United and Arsenal games. You mistake our very best moments in games as a style of play we play all the time. It's not true, if it was we wouldn't be where we are in the league. We waste a lot of time in games playing at a tempo nowhere near the one we play our best stuff at which is why we are often chasing games.
This team needs backing. It's within touching distance of a massive breakthrough. Teething problems are occurring and will be dealt with.

Maybe this thread could be used for any thoughts people have on performance and expectations (what's gone on/how we've performed in the first half of the season and how it matches/surpasses/falls short of their expectations) and what can be expected in the second half of the season?

I'll kick it off in terms of a look at where we've been before at previous season halfway points (last decade) and where we eventually ended up.

Halfway position and points (and in brackets end of season position and points):

2015/16 10th 26pts (................)
2014/15 12th 21pts (11th 47pts)
2013/14 4th 37pts (5th 72pts) EL Qualification
2012/13 6th 33pts (6th 63pts)
2011/12 11th 24pts (7th 56pts)
2010/11 11th 22pts (7th 54pts)
2009/10 11th 22pts (8th 61pts)
2008/09 6th 29pts (5th 63pts) EL Qualification
2007/08 6th 33pts (5th 65pts) EL Qualification
2006/07 8th 27pts (6th 58pts) EL Qualification

This season so far fits in pretty much with the average of the decade at halfway mark in terms of position and points at the turn.

We're obviously playing great attacking football and Keystone Cops defensive football. It'd be nice to think January would bring movement. We need a decent second striker to slot in when the inevitable Lukaku injury comes along and a GK of any note to take over from Howard - although the latter looks unrealistic.

I'm standing by my 60+ point finish and good cup runs as the benchmark of a good season. We'll get them and it'll be a very decent marker down by a developing young team.

It's nice to have some great players, it really is, but it was much easier to take when we had avarage players and finished 5th -10th than when we have great players, and we're gonna struggle to be top 10.

No other team of our stature would have this, We have a better side than them lot over the road, they've had one of the worst seasons imaginable and yet are a point ahead of us with a GIH. They had Suarez carrying them and nearly won the bloody thing, we have Lukaku carrying us but we can't seem to win a game at home, it's just not good enough.

I can see why your saying that, but hard to have faith in a manager who obviously treats defensive organisation with utter contempt, Seems afraid to make the big decisions. Howard being the biggest.

You know as well as I do that the window for this team to achieve their breakthrough will be slamming shut very soon. We will have next season at the very most to get some success. Its quite probable that Lukaku and Stones could go this summer. The procrastination and pandering to Howard has been weak as anything and arguably undermined his entire tenure. A decent keeper and we could be sitting top 4 now that is where the frustration lies. No one is not backing this team, but whether or not you choose to ignore the realities of modern football will not stop them derailing this little development experiment in the very near future putting us back at square one.

Let's beat City in the League Cup semi and let's hope for a decent 4th round Cup draw......confidence is what we need confidence born of winning.

Teething problems? Architects of our own downfall more like, there are no teething problems but plenty that are obvious to everyone apart form the one person who needs to see them but can't.

I don't even think we look terrible defensively during a game, don't know if that's just me, but it just seems to be silly silly moments by individuals that cost us. Howard every game, Mori v Leicester, Stones today twice. I mean structurally I don't think we're ever dreadful at the back, but we concede. We're just a bit soft really, and having a keeper who really can't bail us out does us no help whatsoever.

I agree with @davek. The team's not far away from being something really special. We're too far in to it to knock it on the head and start from scratch.
Halfway into the season and I see one of the most attacking and exciting teams in the Pl and probably our most gifted attack wise since the glory days under Kendall.

There's a problem with the GK and this is down to Martinez. he should have promoted Robles as soon as he played well in the opening games of the LC run.

He needs to act on this and the second half of the season can be more fruitful than this first one.

However, I'm ok for now with where we are. Not great but it's easily remedied when you have a team capable of scoring 35 goals in 19 games.
