Roberto Martinez discussion

So this time last season people were fuming over how we were playing and how results were going.

We have 2 points more than we did last season and hardly anything has changed. We may be playing more exciting football but defensively we're shocking and only getting worse just like Wigan did.

People called it a blip, second season syndrome, the players we had (Distin, Alcaraz etc), European hangover it really isn't.

12 months on and it's exactly the same, the players looked knackered after 75 minutes, we have better players and there is no European football to use as an excuse but you can predict how each match will go without even watching it. If average wasters like us know how we're play in a match, how slowly we'll build up, how we'll keep Del out wide, how Kone won't touch the left wing, how Barry is always going to drop when a full back gets the ball then how easy is it for a Professional manager to come up with a game play to stop our attacking threat or cause us problems defensively.

Unfortunately he won't change and this is the way it is, we'd do well to win a cup but we're not getting into the top 4 any time soon.

It's taken it's time, but he's proved to me that he's got no cojones.

All the crap abar him wanting his players to go the world cup?! Worked out dead well that, 'berto.

3 clean sheets all season? Never mind him persisting with howard, he's got the best full-back pairing in the division, and the most sought after centre half on the planet....3 clean sheets?

The man's a mollycoddler. Dead hard - with the wrong people. Couldn't blame Mirallas if he wants out.
Not quite sure what's real in this thread anymore but this bit is gross negligence of the facts sir! The only games they have been paired in this season are the last two plus a sub appearance on the third from last. How is it a relevant point to the 17 games of the season that you are evaluating?

Top 4 is over to be honest. Let's win a cup. Hopefully jags is back and maybe we should consider selling stones and buy two quality players, a defender and another attacking midfielder who can play on the left

Not defensively mate, too many crosses get into the box. Granted Shay has improved that part of his game this season

I think, for the most part, is that people are scared. Not scared about the present, but the future. The people we have at this club have the POTENTIAL to be world class. If our results dont reflect where we should be, they will leave. Some much faster than others. Martinez has shown he is learning from some of the mistakes he has made but not others. He's still making a lot of 'dumb' mistakes like his subs that leave almost everyone scratching their heads.

I think this team could be doing a lot better than they are.

Rodwell had POTENTIAL

Relevance, sir?

How many goals have we shipped when we've had Baines & Coleman playing, and against who? And, more to the point, what have been our results? Have we won a game with them both playing?

Have results improved? No.

Has the defence improved? No.

Does it look like things are about to improve? No.

It was striking just how many people, when walking out the game yesterday, were openly questioning Martinez's position rather than grumblings.

Even people who last season were reluctant to openly criticise Martinez were last night suggesting it maybe was time for him to leave.

Why? Well personally I think the realisation that this is the best team we've had in twenty-odd years and unless we succeed we will lose them.

The football may look better on the face of it, but we are really no better off than last year in a season that is the most open it has been in years.

This was meant to be our 'easier' fun of fixtures yet we're flunking our lines; I worry what will happen in our difficult run through the New Year.

Once we get knocked out the LC its time for him to go

Changing mid season unless in immediate danger of relegation is usually not sensible. The market of who is available is far smaller and there is no time for a proper preseason.

I've always said a manager needs at least three seasons to show what he can do. For me the end of this season will be quite a pivotal one. Lukaku and Stones will probably be off (dependent on our success) and so will players like Mirallas, Naismith plus the potential retirements of the likes of Hobbert Osman and Pienaar. In short a large squad rebuild could be on the cards. In my mind that would signal the logical end of Martinez's first cycle of an Everton team. The judgement then comes as to whether you think he has done enough to warrant being the person who we trust to carry on. If the second part of the season goes well in the cups and league it would be silly to say he's not that person, if things continue in line with current form then I don't believe he will have shown enough to warrant further support. This is his squad now and he has to show he can be competitive with Everton in the league as a minimum.

All of this is irrelevant anyway as I don't think the board have any minimum standard above not getting relegated.
