Roberto Martinez discussion

It's amazing how everyone is turning against our manager.

We're not a sacking club. We're not a kneejerk reaction club.

We're better than this.
dead right mate...we're not a sacking club and we're not a kneejerk reaction club :we're a 7th-11th ranked club. I got told off by @Woolly Blue for being a smart arse about this. But my facetious irreverence has borne truthful fruit. This is the best Everton XI in a generation....and the best we will do is...seventh. I care less what the @davek apologists harp on about, as do the @Blue Cheese 's with their illegible grammar: Everton circa 2015 is missing an opportunity of my what's left lifetime....and it kind of pisses me off.

To be fair, we finished 5th two years ago

Where do you reckon we'll finish?

God knows mate.

If we carry on floating around the 35% mark for wins, you're looking at anything from 10th-13th going by previous seasons, maybe a bit lower.

Under Moyes, our Prem finishes were

15th
7th
17th
4th
11th
6th
5th
5th
8th
7th
7th
6th

So no consecutive bottom half finishes with squads in a number of seasons far, far, far worse than the current one. And he didn't have a 20 goal a season (all competitions to be fair) striker of Lukaku's quality for three consecutive seasons.

The problem with praising performances is that they are essentially intangible - are we really being entertained if we play nice but left with disappointment on results? Not sure, I think it's subjective.

For me, there are key problems. The goalkeeper is now a complete liability. I personally think Funes Mori is utter garbage, but he's only played in, what, 16 of those 55 games (the 17 in 55 run referenced elsewhere); so the defensive unit is failing beyond just him. And some very, very average players have come in, like Kone and Cleverly, and it seems that they are largely untouchable.

We are being asked to see a semi-final as 'progress'. Is that it? Even Moyes managed what, three in his eleven full seasons - and his cup record is rightly judged as woeful. Martinez has managed one in three (so far), with the ignominy of going out in the first round of both comps last season.

And the worse thing about it all is we aren't even holding Martinez up against the yardsticks of Kendall, Royle, Catterick et al. - a standard we should be aspiring to. We're only comparing him with Moyes, who drifted through his final 5 years at the Club every season more disillusioned and disinterested than the last.

Good post ...we are on similar page. You know mate, my first sporting love isn't Everton. I've lived in NZ for 90% of my life and I LOVE the All Blacks...
Philosophically, I guess supporting NZ in rugby and Everton in football provides life's ying and the yang (Everton always supplying the yang)

Where has the 16 in 51 come from? Seen it all over Twitter tonight. Which 51 is that?

Do you know?

It's the last 51 league games. They might as well go back and include all of last season and this season so far, as it's even worse with 17 wins in 55 league games.

Haha.

Total opposite here. Enjoy watching sport of all kinds but the only team I am genuinely moved by the trials and tribulations of is Everton. You look at things like the history, the stadium, the impact on the local community, EITC and all the sort of thing and it's something to be truly proud of.

Then I watch 11 lads not really look like they give too much of a care about the result as long as they get paid and a manager who talks in happy-clappy soundbites and I sometimes struggle to match the two up.

For me, Martinez's claim that it isn't about the result, more the performances, is utterly bemusing. Who is the performance for? The performance the players gave last season had them boo'ed off most weeks. So what is he seeking, exoneration from the purists in the MOTD studio? The reality is that people who are paying for the entertainment aren't leaving the ground feeling entertained most weeks ; 7 wins from 19 home games last season and 3 from 9 this season. Three from nine! And two of those were against Villa and Sunderland; the other against a Chelsea side all at sea so far.

I have no issue with people having the total opposite view - but when people talk about knee-jerking, I'm just not sure how people's concerns can be described as reactionary to this - it's a sustained period of poor performance.
